I have some elephant ear style mirrors on my early 1986 turbo.

Initially - i thought that the mirrors were placed way too far back along the car? Did they move in subsequent years? I had a 1989 turbo and a 1994 968 and the mirrors seemed perfectly positioned on these cars. Maybe just my imagination though :-).

Anyway, looking into the mirrors, the all round visibility is very poor. I did a search on teardrop mirrors on this thread and it was mentioned that the elephant ear style mirror offers great all round visibility especially in the blind spot.

Mine do not - so can the glass part of the mirror be wrong? Maybe the convex/concave aspect is wrong?

I have a 1986 924S and 1991 944S2 and frommemory the mirrors are in the same position on the door, almost at the front of the doors where the frame meets the windscreen. I would say that the teardrop mirrors offer less of a rear view than the standard ones and have not noticed any real issues with the standard mirrors, maybe someone has replaced the glass incorrectly or for the wrong type in the past.

I think the flag mirrors are great personally. Great visibility and the fact that the glass is recessed a little seems to help keep the worst of the rain off.

Hi :)

I have flag mirrors on my 928 and the visibility is a LOT better than Teardrops (also driven)... there is also a nasty blindspot with teardops that is NOT there with Flags....

All the best Brett :)

Hi,

I've recently replaced my flag mirrors with teardrop mirrors. I can honestly say that I have not noticed any difference in the visibilty either type of mirrors give. IMO, I think the teardrop mirrors look a lot nicer and update the look of the car (not that it needs any help in that area, the 944 looks as good today as it did back in the day). :D

The only downside to fitting teardrops is the cost. I managed to get mine for a steal on eBay but had to replace the mirror base door mounts for the 968 style. (Mirror bases only around £25 each from OPC). By the time you factor in the cost of getting them sprayed, it does start to add up.

It all depends on what look you want for your car.

Regards,

Ben :bounce:

Hi

I have owned cars with both. In my opinion the flag mirrors offer better visability and stay cleaner longer.
In my 944 Turbo retrofitted fitted with teardrops by someone, I have difficulty obtaining a good view from the near side mirror. My wife has the same problem so it may be to do with shorter people?

I never had this problem with my 968 or 928 which have tear drops as standard.

I suspect the mounting pads on some of the retrofitted teardrop mirrors may be mounts meant for LHD?

Stephen
