Am I right in thinking that I can check if my transmission mount is knac**ed by jacking up from the gearbox and seeing how much free travel there is before the car lifts? I read this as a test for a 914 and seems logical.

I want to see if my transmission mount is past its best before I start digging into other areas that might be causing the same symptoms of notchy gear change and juddering when setting off or dropping to second. I think or fear it is probably the clutch but want to exhaust all options or at least cheaper ones than swopping the clutch.

Car is a 1991 944S2.

I would check that it is not a hydraulic mount first.

I guess it could work but often it is in this case that the rubber centre of the clutch is breaking up . At least with a new clutch your car will become more sellable.

The transmission mount as far as I can tell is a solid rubber block sandwiched between two end plates and secured to the transmission and cross member, I will check at the weekend if there is any noticeable play. The engine mounts have been changed fairly recently so I do not suspect them, as you say most likely is the clutch centre but just waanted to rule out the easy cheaper fix first, not bothered about it's resale value at least not yet anyway.

I think I have answered my own question, if the transmission mount was severly worn then I would suspect I would get juddering and banging when I went on and off the gas particularly in low gears, which I don't and as I don't get the problem every time I change down I suspect it is the clutch rubber center breaking down, so time to save up for a new clutch I think.
