You are correct, up to and including the 2008 version and 360 version 3, Norton used to use between 15 and 17% of your system resources......unfortunately...

Norton finally fixed it with the new 2009 version and 360 version 3 (also 2009)...it now uses LESS than 1% of system resources...

If you bought it in 08 its the earlier version 2...the slow one.....if you get the new version 3 of 360 or NIS 2009, your machine WILL speed up lol

bought it at xmas 2008, so will upgrade to newer version soon, but why did it allow the malicious software through ?

Norton is PRIMARILY ...antivirus and firewall...it does not consider some of the lesser spyware as important....particularly if its ALREADY IN your machine....unfortunately....

These programs are very hard for any AV program to differentiate from a normal installed program......and Nis handles them better than most, although as I have already said...MBAM handles spyware extremely well and will usually find and deal with 99.9% of it....although it is not as good at dealing with viruses...therefor NIS as well....

Ps. if you do want Nis 09, I will send you it at a trade price if you wish......which will be MUCH cheaper than you can buy it anywhere......

I have had two laptops that died using Norton with the current upgrades,
I use Kaspersky these days.
