if its got service history upto 2000 surely the mileage will be on the invoices, perhaps the speedo packed up and was replaced

Yes you are right, all invoices match up to 2000. It was the declared mileage (according to the DVLA) in 2001 that was the problem. Anyway I now have some MOT's which verify the mileage as correct, and the DVLA is not right.

Can the DVLA records be updated if you can show that they are incorrect? Otherwise I'm going to get the same problems if I ever sell the car.

The new MOT i guess is a good sign, but 7k miles in the last 8 years will not have done the car much good in any department. I'd want to see the list of advisories from the MOT as i bet there will be a whole host of bushes etc listed. You could be looking at a lot of work. Unless they tyres have been replaced recently then i'd change those , and all fluids will need renewing.

Seller says he's changed all fluids (antifreeze, engine/transmission oil, brake fluid, PAS fluid etc) He's also fitted brake pads.
MOT done on Monday....no advisories.
I went to see it tonight and it looked really nice, so I bought it. The engine cover (underneath) was not fitted, he said people remove them to "aid cooling" but he did give me the part and I will probably refit it.

Drove it home and seems fine. Everything works including aircon. The main beam is utterly pants. Apart from that seems great. The bodywork is superb on it.

One thing, the "toothed belt service" indicator kept coming on, and this would appear to mean that the timing belt needs inspecting/checking.

Tyres yes as soon as I can afford it.

The engine cover A. keeps the engine clean & B. improves cooling. I think the tensioner has a warning light on it on the 928. The light comes on if the belt is too slack as I understand.

Hello everybody, I'm the seller, I've followed this post for a while and thought I should say something now :) , the car is ace and i'll miss it lots, I really did not want to sell it, I've lived with that car within 50 ft of me day and night for 8 years, it's been looked after better than most children :D , I'm a genuine enthuist like yourselves and a complete car nut, I live for cars  and the S4 is my favourite, and to the buyer, if I can ever help with anything let me know, as you can see, the work I do is a high standard (30 years of experience went into keeping that car sweet). I did think you were wasting my time (sorry about that, it happens) you'll love the car. If I ever manage to make any sodding mony I'd like it back.

Hi :)

If the cambelt light is on ...STOP DRIVING IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That is usually caused as Jim says by a loose cam belt...WHEN was it last changed.....it SHOULD be changed with the waterpump EVERY 4 YEARS NO MATTER WHAT MILEAGE ITS DONE....

If that belt slips a tooth or breaks you are looking at thousands as yours is an "interference engine" which means that when the belt goes the valves hit the pistons HARD.....even at idle.... :(

Ring Paul Anderson and ask his advice......

All the best Brett :)

I need to check the timing belt then. The seller says he changed it about a year ago and the car has done nothing since....it's been on SORN. I budgeted for initial maintenance, but can I check this myself? I'm pretty good with cars, but am not familiar with the 928. If it's had a new belt maybe it just needs retensioning. I can see from the history that the belt was also changed some years ago and had to go back for a "tension check" then.
Is the cam belt tensioner not automatic? Can I get to it without going underneath the car?

If I can't are there any Porsche specialists near to Stockport so I don't have to drive it too far?

Until this has been checked I'm not going to drive the car again.

Sorry to the seller if I stalled a bit after winning the car on ebay. The DVLA check threw up a mileage discrepancy and I should have checked earlier, not the night before collection!
The mileage discrepancy was a DVLA error in the end.

I can't get thorough to PAUL ANDERSON....his voicemail still says he's away until the 17th of August! He's also not replied to a voicemail I left him earlier in the month.
I've sent an email today also.

There's a specialist listed in Bramhall, near to me. TONY GREATOREX "established 20 years".

Hi :)

The timing belt tension needs rechecking (with a tool) after 1500 miles (after its change)

Its particulary important on a 928 as the belt is 7 feet long and in particular the waterpump is driven by the BACK (smooth not toothed) side of the belt...so if the belt tension goes slack one of 2 things happens.....

1, Engine boils as waterpump not being driven fast enough and usually blows your head gasket....

2, Belt so slack that it jumps a tooth or 3 on the camshafts and bang.....LOTS of bent valves..

Both not good :(

So you need that belt tension checking....

All the best Brett :)

The 928 specialist in your part of the world is Chris Sanderson at Loe Bank Motors

http://www.loebankmotors.co.uk/

He's been around for years and is well respected by 928 folk

I've had a good look around the car today and have not found anything that I am unhappy with at all. The tool kit is all present, the engine oil looks fresh, antifreeze looks new and checks out fine on the tester, etc.

Will get it in on Tuesday for the flexplate and cambelt.....then I can start using it!

Sounds like nice example so well done on winning it.

The belt retension is very quick and easy but you need right tool to measure it. It could also be indicating a fault in the last belt installation or (much less seriously) a fault in warning system itself.

Either way best to have it checked by 928 expert till you are familiar with car. Many excellent reports about Loe Bank.

Regards

Adrian

Thanks for the advice. That guy is too far away, I'm going to have to use the other one as he's only 5 miles from me....and I'm going to have to drive the car there.

You should be ok driving it to have it checked, it is all new, every bearing and the pump, a proper belt tensioning tool was used when I installed it but belts can give a little when fitted new, it's either slackened off a bit or the warning system is giving a false alarm. If only you lived near me I would sort it out for you.

Thanks for the offer, I did budget for initial maintenance though, so I'm not complaining. The car is after all over 20 years old.
I can't find anybody to look at it though!

Paul Anderson.......still no reply after 2 voicemails and an email. Voicemail says "away until 17th August"
Chris Sanderson....on holiday
Tony Greatorex....."full up" then "on holiday" after next week so "can't help, sorry"
