hi just brought a 1988 944 when you start it it seems to turn over slowly.. but does not fail to start...and turns about 3 to 5 times then fires up...i have had the starter striped and checked and all o.k. leads from battery o.k. earth lead at back of engine to fire wall o.k. still need to check the battery out..the car as not been used much in the last 2 years..is there anythink else i should look for...phil....

They nearly all do! But they always start. In 3 years mine has never failed to start. Lots of other things have gone wrong but it always starts whatever the weather. Check your earth straps but so long as it goes I wouldn't worry too much.

As JJ says they all do it. The slow cranking seems endemic & the fact that they take several revolutions is down to the management taking that long to wake up & get sparks & fuelling sorted. I found a new heavy duty battery made the turning a fraction faster but not hugely.

Strip down the starter clean out all the old dryed up white grease around the gears, replace and you'll find it alot better.

As previously stated "they all do that" ECU needs to see 45 RPM before switching the DME realy to give sparks and fuel so there will be a slight delay in starting...........................nowt wrong with it i would say.

The old rose was much better but got much more money thrown at it.

You could replace the DME relay anyway. Some owners replace it every 4 years or so as part of the service schedule. my '44 also needs a big old crank before owt happens.
