That F reg S4 has been on sale on 928.org.uk since early July, asking price £9000 so presumably reserve of at least £7000 or higher?

Hi Adrian :)

Lol..well he will never get 9k for it...a GTS went recently for 10k....

I seriously doubt he will even get 7k....

Not until this recession ends....

All the best Brett :)

Agreed Brett, it is optimistically priced to say the least. I'm always baffled by cars which are on sale for months/forever at crazy prices.Surprised seller doesn't get message, and equally surprised that they can afford to hold the stock if they are traders.

Thanks for the advice/help everybody.
I've emailed the S2 seller, it looks like a good prospect. That other blue one on ebay looks lovely but is probably too dear for me, I'm going to bid on it anyway, you never know.

Another nice S4 just popped up today on eBay, also Cambridgeshire so you could conveniently assess both on one trip:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1988-PP-PORSCHE-9 ... 286.c0.m14

The 80s Emporium is mentioned in the ad (not clear in what context, they talk abousays they "oversaw" refurb. Either way they have a good rep for finding nice 928s.

I'm bidding on one of them (reserve not met though) and have put in an offer for the blue one that's advertised at £5500. Being a dealer sale I should get some kind of warranty which will be well worth having.

Is your offer on the 5.5K one subject to inspection/test drive or have you already been to see it? Ditto one you're bidding on.

Subject to an inspection/test drive. As suggested I can look at both cars in one journey. There always seem to be quite a few of these for sale. Is it because the survival rate is high or do people buy them and then realise the costs that can be involved I wonder.
This happens with vintage cars. They are lovely to look at and the idea of owning one is great, but the reality can be that you spend half your time under the bonnet/underneath it just to keep it going. Some of the vintage cars I've owned have had a new owner every year.
What tends to happen is eventually an old buffer buys it, then it never comes up for sale again until he passes away, whereupon it surfaces at a local auction.

That's a shrewd comment Lightning.

Yes the survival rate is high - there were about 4600 928s sold in UK since 1978 and around 1600 still on road which is high (albeit less than the Porsche 'average' for cars still on road).

If you're not into DIY then maintenance on a 928 can be very expensive as so few mechanics have experience of them, hence very high labour costs to do jobs with which they are unfamiliar and which are lengthy anyway (eg say 10 hours for engine mounts or timing belt, though a real expert will need far less time). Owners of other Porsche models are spoilt for choice by comparison - the question they might ask is "where around Birmingham could I have my 944 serviced", whereas a 928 owner has to ask "where in the UK". Of course some owners are attracted to the relative rarity of the car (if I go out locally in a not posh area I'll see a handful of Boxsters and 911s on the trip - heck I can see 3 new 911s walking down the road round the corner from me. I think I've seen less than 10 928s on all journeys I've made in past 3 years, not counting ones on way to a Porsche event or show. 1600 cars = 1 in every 10,000 cars on UK roads).

If you are into DIY then many jobs are more complicated then on other Porsches of similar vintage.

Then they were expensive cars to begin with, so maintenance/parts costs commensurately high even if the purchase price these days is so low. This can be a shock to new owners, who will move the car on when faced with a big bill.

On the other hand there's no need to be forever stuck under bonnet keeping these cars going. Mechanically they are hugely reliable. The cost is in routine service jobs and the age of the cars means major replacement work is becoming due (eg shocks should be changed by 100,000 miles, corroded brake calipers need sorting and so on). If you want a perfect car there will be jobs to do as there are so many electrical systems and these create most of the problems (many because PO or alarm installer bodged something!). Very rare that a 928 will actually let you down.

I can do certain jobs on cars, the mistake is to wade in when you are not really sure and make things worse!

The seller of the blue 928 refused my offer of £5000 (car advertised at £5500) and said I was "cheeky" to also expect a warranty at the lower price.

Sounds like usual dance involved in doing a deal to me. Stay in touch with the seller and consider slightly raising your offer.

What was car like? An expert inspection may provide negotiating points over and above inspection cost.

Hi :)

The dealer is hoping you do not know the law....

Which is,,,,,If you buy ANY used car from a DEALER at ANY price you legally have a 3 months warranty.....he does not get a choice...its not volountary...its the LAW....

Added ...to be honest..i would avoid ANY dealer that tried that one on with you....its asking for future trouble....

All the best Brett :)
