Hi Folks,
We discovered a geat deal of water behind both seats yesterday, the carpets are dripping wet! I have already replaced the boot seal and the wells in the boot are dry so I can only assume it is from the sunroof. I have examined the sun roof whilst it is raining (most of the time in Devon) and can see no evidence of leaks, certainly there are no drips onto the interior. Should I replace the sunroof seal or could the water be getting in from somewhere else?

Thanks

Steve

Don't assume that because the water is in the the rear that the leak is from the rear.

Hi Steve
Sorry to read about the leaks. I have that same problem with my 944 and its definatly from the boot so it will have to be done PDQ before the winter starts. Can you tell me how much the seal for the boot costs and is it a big job to replace ?
Thanks
Don

I had some water leakage on my S2 from the front but this was my own fault I had left a screw out of the heater motor mounting unit at the very rear of the engine bay and water running from the windscreen could get directly into the car.

I would check the sunroof is water tight easy enough to do with a watering can and someone in the back of the car checking for leaks.

I think I paid around £60 for the main hatch seal on my S2 from Porscheshop and I bought it off eBay as this was cheaper than going directly to Porscheshop and failing to get the TIPEC discount again. There are a number of other seals on the hatch but these mostly stop the water getting into the boot and would not likely wet the rear passenger space. Fitting the new seal is very easy as long as you remember to get it pushed onto the frame especially around the top corner of the hatch before cutting the seal to fit, otherwise you might end up with too much gap where the two ends meet.

The boot seal cost about £30 and I found it very straight forward to fit. I think the best ones come fron the OPC and these are not significantly dearer.

Thanks for the advice on fitting a new seal, this will help. I am still not convinced that the leak is from the sunroof but where else could it be? The water appears to be below the rear carpet and as far as I can tell the front fottwells are dry.

Check the sun roof drains, remove the roof and pour water in each corner and check that it drains onto the floor.

It is possible for water to run down the floor channels without staying in the front

I made a mistake with my price I bought the other small seal around the spoiler at the same time so more than just the hatch seal. As said previously £30 and easy to fit, but I would have thought more likely to be the sunroof.

Thanks Dave,
We did the sun roof drains test on Sunday and each of the drains appears clear, at least water ran out of the bottom. If the leak was from the front wouldn't the front carpets be wet?

Not always. Remember that the floor is not flat, water could run along the strengthening webs with out touching the carpet.

There used to be water in my boot wells, but I took out, cleaned as they were full of slime and grime, and refitted correctly the boot hatch lock rubber seals (above the number plate). I have not had any problems since.

Mine leaks in in the front passenger footwell. It drips down from over the top of the glove box, and I can feel and see (with a torch) the dampness on the top of the glove box. But I cannot find the leak.

If it is leaking above the glove box, depends what model you have but the early models tend to leak where the heater fan fixes to the bulkhead where this was a flat joint sealed with mastic, you can tighten the mounting bolts from underneath the dash if you lie on your back and look up behind the center console/glovebox. This is where my 924S used to leak from, the later models have a different heater motor unit under the black shroud at the rear of the engine bay and this seals onto a raised lip so unless you have some screws missing from the motor assembly you would need a lot of standing water to run over the lip.

However the motor top and botton housings are only plastic so could have cracked and be letting water in, easy to check, but to doo it properly you need to remove the wipers to get the shroud off, or you can see pretty well if you remove only the front shroud seal and lift the shroud up but be careful not to crack it. If its an early model then there is no shroud so easy to check, but that area does tend to get full of leaves etc which act like a damn and can hold a lot of water in that region particularly if the drain holes are blocked as well.

The Battery tray is also prone to rust! leafs etc build up there and can cause drips to the fuse board and elec probs. easy to fix with filler and lots of under seal.

I had the water gathering in the rear foot wells too.
The water seemed to be entering the car through the blower box under the scuttle panel.
The scuttle panel was damaged so after replacing it with a new one i have not had any water ingress.
Took me a while to find the cause. Went through the usual suspect areas to no avail.

Good luck.

Thanks Martin,
My scuttle cover is also damaged ie cracked and this could be the cause of the problem. Did you get the replacement from an OPC and what was the price?

Thanks

Steve
