Hi, went to look at an s2 yesterday it's a little bit tatty but honest and may be a bargain. My only concern was that the engine seemed to have quite a prominant whirring/whining sound from the front end. My current LUX does this very quietly but this one was loud enough for me to walk away - at least for now. With mine doing it a little I wondered if it's a common thing, whether it's a big worry or a big bill waiting to happen?

I am sure someone more familiar with the S2 will be along shortly, however in the meantime my 'S' (also a 16V head although different to the S2's) makes all kinds of whirring noises, louder some days than others and on occasion also seems very 'tappity' although not always. Still drives fine though.

I call it personality :D

Sometimes when the belts have just been done or re-tensioned you get a whining noise from the front, I had my S2 belts checked and adjusted and when the car is first started or at idle you can hear a whining from the belt area, I think from other comments made this is normal. It is not a loud whine just a low almost whistle sound.

Hmmm. Thanks guys, it just seems to be really quite prominent - you can hear it coming! Any more comments?

Unless it's just had new belts I would say that the cam belt could be over tight. Could be noisy power steering pump also as mine made quite a racket before it died! (It was leaking like a sieve at that stage.) I would add that if the bodywork is tatty you should walk away as it costs loads to sort out. If the engine is tired it will have less HP than a fit lux. If you want an S2 then get a good one. It will save you loads in the end.

I would concur with what JJ said if you want an S" get a good one with good bodywork and the problems sorted otherwise you can spend a fortune and end up no better off than you were before. In fact why not buy my 1991 S2 see cars for sale.

I think probably a combination of new balance belt with old tensioner or idler, or it's just a little over-tight when cold but will be ok when warm.

Thanks guys, think I will give that one a miss. David, your car looks fabulous but I'm afraid it's well over my budget. Despite it's problems this one was for sale at half that. I'm aware that buying cheap is often false economy and you can run into a lot of expensive problems, but I'm convinced I can find an honest if not perfect car for around the 2.5k mark. What do you guys think?

No chance! Not an S2. A mint Lux will cost more. Besides theres no point. I've seen S2's make as little as 130 at the wheels. My lux is well over that. It's all in the condition. Not what a road tester said 20 years ago when the cars were new! You will just spend 5K on your tired S2 sorting it out. I spent 4 on a lux (Over 3 years) I could have spent a bit more on a mint 2.7. Now I wish I had.

Balance belt too tight - almost every time.

i agree balance or cam belt too tight, probably balance belt, or a tension roller on the way out, altho' mine does whine, even after it was retensioned recently, on the S2 you looked at was the noise like a supercharger type whine ?
