Right to my great annoyance I have now found a crack in my windscreen, big enough to cause a problem and fail an MOT (after what they failed my Subaru on they will pick anywhere!).

I know I am going to regret this but how much is a windscreen? am I better off getting a 2nd hand windscreen from a breakers and get someone to fit it? if so how much would I expect to pay? :(

What year? 924 and series one 944 screens are far cheaper than series two 944 screens which are flush fitting. A 937 (924 CGT) flush fitting screen is usefully cheaper but it doesnt have an integrated radio aerial...

I got a new one on the insurance. Cost me £50. Think it was £1800 from memory. 9442 Flush job tinted with radio areal in it. Insurance cost £100 over the odds but lots of extras in it.

From this post it easy to see how easily one can be ripped off unless you do your homework first.

Just dug the reciept out. 9442 It was £926.50 If you could get them for £300 the Insurance wouldn't have paid. That was Autoglass & they were the cheapest. You can get second hand ones but thats a different story. Well worth the extra for full glass cover. Be glad it's not the rear one. There £4500!

I can 'get them' for under £300, and so can you. It was because I can get them for under £300 that I posted as I did. Do you think that I simply made the figure up?

A Saint Corbain (the OEM manufacturer) flush screen with integrated antenna cost me a shade over £200 in 1995, from a windscreen wholesaler. I think that it is foolish to suppose that the price that Autoglass, or similar, quote represents the true cost of the part.

Further to the above: the prices that I am referring to were quoted to me last Autumn, by an autoglass wholesaler.

In my experience, what insurance approved windscreen suppliers charge insurance companies for glass and fitting is far higher than they would charge a private individual for the same item.

The official dealer price for a flush screen was about £350 in 1995, fro those interested. The price was the same whether you wanted a top tint or not and it was similar for cabriolet screens too. I bought several off JCT600 in Bradford which PCGB had on a clearance offer list, for £100. They should have been clear/un-tinted (probably for Swedish market cars, as all UK series two cars had tinted glass), but when I got them home they were all tinted cabriolet screens. JCT didnt return my calls so I ended up having to keep them; although I did do rather well out of them in the end.

very interesting 944 man. You no more made up the figure than I did. But these days insurance are pretty sharp Bodyshops don't make so much on insurance claims anymore. It's odd that they alllow a windscreen company to over charge them by 3X! :?

I doubt that the contracted replacement companies charge anything more than a cost + % and a contract fitting rate. Invoice values and extortionate mark-ups are reserved for punters, Im sure.

This is the reason that they insist that you use their contractors, when you could get a replacement fitted yourself for £340 (£approximately £300 for the screen and £40 for fitting). If they were paying the 'invoice' value then theyd have your arm off: as it is theyll almost certainly penalise you, if theyll allow you to claim at all.

A fitter will charge about £40 and Porsche only want £261-£282 for a 924-type series one windscreen (proof for the doubters: #477845011D Windshield £260.57: #477845011F Windshield £272.48; #477845011E Windshield £281.85).

I think that this goes to show that the prices quoted by these firms are a nonsense.
