I have a 1991 944 S2 and over the last few weeks the wipers have been getting slower on intermittent, sweep and normal speed.

Today they were almost stopping but would still work on fast or extra fast speed, then they stopped working on sweep, intermittent and normal speed and will only operate on fast or 2nd speed fast wipe, where they seem to operate at the correct speed however they will not park when turned off they just crawl across the screen and stop halfway. The only way to park them is to switch off the wipers at the bottom of their cycle.

Any ideas? Before I start stripping the plastic cowling off.

I have checked the intermittent relay and it seems OK as is the earth cable from the motor.

Wiper problems over the years have either been dead or poorly relays or & more commonly broken stalks or the connections to them.
You need to access the stalk & see if it is switching properly.
Another thought is a partially seized wheelbox.

My vote is for a seized wheelbox. Seems this is not uncommon on German cars. Happens on MkIV Golfs a lot (AMHIK).

This is exactly what mine does, no intermittent or slow sweep and non-parking on medium and fast sweep. I recently acquired another wiper motor and that works fine, so in my case it is a worn out motor.

Damn, just seen Simons post, I will have to see if thats the problem with my old one.

Thanks for the advice seems this might be likely as the wipers operate ok at high and high high speed and wash wipe but with no park facility and have detoriated slowly over time rather than stop suddenly. Suppose I am going to have to remove the plastic cowling from the front and check this out.

I managed to get some releasing agent onto some of the linkages in the wiper mechanism and although this has not solved the problem it did show some improvement (not good enough however) so I do think it is the wheel box problem discussed earlier.

I will have to remove the cowling from the bulkhead to get to all the hidden parts so will do that this weekend if the weather holds out.
