They think it cant be drilled from outside down into lock as they say even with barrel removed it will remain 'locked'.
I cannot see how it can be drilled off from inside, but will look at it again in next few days to see if I have missed anything.
I have three possible moves:
1) I get another key from Porsche in case the ignition key has been changed in the cars life OR the fact that it is so worn means it won't work the boot lid, but is happy to turn the ignition. Cost of this is £51 plus vat. If it does not work, the money is down the toilet. (To add there is no movement whatsoever when I put the key in. It is totally solid)
2) I call a locksmith. He might be able to get it open? However if he can't .... the call out (probably £70?) charge will be wasted.
3) I think it maybe possible to get some kind of air tool cutting device in beteen the lid and the car to cut through the spike that decends into the lock 'hole'. Looking at the manual this can be replaced. (I would need to buy/rent the air tool or cutting device as well)
Anyone got any thoughts? I am tempted to start a poll
My thoughts (for what they're worth):
1) If your ignition key also opens the driver's door it's unlikely that just the ignition key has been changed. If you only have one key then getting a second key cut is probably a good idea anyway; if you aren't in a desperate rush you can get a replacement key cut from a digital photo which is cheaper and, if the locks have been changed, more likely to work than the OPC key which will be cut based on the key recorded against the chassis number.
2) I have no idea how a locksmith would approach this problem, but it wouldn't hurt to phone a few, explain the problem and see if they think they could open it before deciding to actually call one out.
3) I would think this option is a last resort. Before you do contemplate cutting or drilling, have you followed up the suggestion I saw on the 928uk mailing list of at least seeing a working lock in action; even if it doesn't give you a way to get the hatch open from inside the car, just seeing the two halves apart might be helpful in deciding how/where to attack it with cutting tools?
I see from your location that you're near Bath, this means that you're relatively near to Paul Anderson in Stroud (although you want to do all the work on the car yourself, it's useful having someone so well-regarded by the 928 community so close, just in case you want to drop in for some advice and secondhand parts) and there are several nearby 928 owners, perhaps if you posted a request on the 928uk list you'd find someone happy to let you look at a working lock mechanism. Alternatively there's even a very quiet Yahoogroup for southwest 928 owners I could point you in the direction of, most of whom seem to be in the Gloucester/Bristol/Wiltshire area, so at least you'd be in contact with local owners.
