Thanks for that. I did try, but couldn't quite get door open to get interior lights on where it is.

I am pulling it out tomorrow, so finally should be able to sort one way or another.

Appreciate the help!

Thanks
Regards
Paul

Hi All,

Right, I have it out of the garage, have opened the door and still the boot release does not open.

I want to either release it from the inside or ideally fix the thing. I have ordered a workshop manual but its not arrived. Can anyone tell me if there is a relay that has anything to do with the boot release? I will check the fuses.

Rather unusually there are a few relays on the floor. Many of them are Ford! And a few gaps.

On trying to release from the inside I have accessed the rear panel and I can see the motor and there is a metal bar coming out and upwards towards the lock. On a working model does this bar move down or to the side to release the lock?

Thanks!

Hi Paul :)

That bar in second picture is for the REAR WIPER !

Look for a thinner one lower down and to the left of it...thats the one you need..........

All the best Brett :)

Its the brass one coming out from the left of the black motor I think?

I have pulled and pushed it, so now going to take it all apart and see if that frees it up. If not I guess I will have to drill the lock out or get a lock smith.

Regards
Paul

Hi :)

Yes its that brass one...

It needs to be pushed so that it makes the lock brassbit turn in a circle...

Unhook the bit that joins the motor and then push it , i think upwards...if not pull downwards on it...

All the best Brett :)

I broke it off! Then took off the motor to see if this helped gain access, but still no luck.
I then connected a battery directly to the terminals and still nothing.

Looking at it again I suspect that the motor and the lock mechanism need power together and although seperate work together, but as I snapped the brass thing off and the other end (that it was attached to) disappeared upwards into the lid its not looking good!

I am going to put a SOS out on the 928uk thing in case anyone has any ideas. After that if no luck I guess I am going to have to call out a lock smith.

Had a good look round the car and pretty happy with it though. Just want to open the boot! Arghhh!!!

Regards
Paul

Further probing has resulted in no luck. I have pulled and pushed the dangling bit every way going.

Soaking the lock in WD40 overnight has resulted in no movement either.

I think I will try and find a tailgate and drill the lock. Its going to cost as much as a new boot lock as long as I can get the key for it. Plus my exisiting tail gate has a mobile phone aerial stuck on it as well so two birds with one stone.

Regards
Paul

Hi :)

IF ITS ABSOLUTELY stuck...here is what I would do.....i would drill away the lock mechanism which you can see from the inside...the LOWER part...NOT the part in the hatch...

You cannot unbolt it as the 2 allen bolts that hold it in place are above it and need the hatch to be open to get at them :(

I wouldn't go for another hatch as they have massive problems fitting with no leaks and the rubber seals are hugely expensive as well....

All the best Brett :)

Hi,

I popped into a OPC today for advice.

They think it cant be drilled from outside down into lock as they say even with barrel removed it will remain 'locked'.

I cannot see how it can be drilled off from inside, but will look at it again in next few days to see if I have missed anything.

I have three possible moves:

1) I get another key from Porsche in case the ignition key has been changed in the cars life OR the fact that it is so worn means it won't work the boot lid, but is happy to turn the ignition. Cost of this is £51 plus vat. If it does not work, the money is down the toilet. (To add there is no movement whatsoever when I put the key in. It is totally solid)

2) I call a locksmith. He might be able to get it open? However if he can't .... the call out (probably £70?) charge will be wasted.

3) I think it maybe possible to get some kind of air tool cutting device in beteen the lid and the car to cut through the spike that decends into the lock 'hole'. Looking at the manual this can be replaced. (I would need to buy/rent the air tool or cutting device as well)

Anyone got any thoughts? I am tempted to start a poll :)

Whatever I do will do at the weekend as too busy this week in the evenings unfortunately.

Let's hope the next job is easier

Regards
Paul

My thoughts (for what they're worth):

1) If your ignition key also opens the driver's door it's unlikely that just the ignition key has been changed. If you only have one key then getting a second key cut is probably a good idea anyway; if you aren't in a desperate rush you can get a replacement key cut from a digital photo which is cheaper and, if the locks have been changed, more likely to work than the OPC key which will be cut based on the key recorded against the chassis number.

2) I have no idea how a locksmith would approach this problem, but it wouldn't hurt to phone a few, explain the problem and see if they think they could open it before deciding to actually call one out.

3) I would think this option is a last resort. Before you do contemplate cutting or drilling, have you followed up the suggestion I saw on the 928uk mailing list of at least seeing a working lock in action; even if it doesn't give you a way to get the hatch open from inside the car, just seeing the two halves apart might be helpful in deciding how/where to attack it with cutting tools?

I see from your location that you're near Bath, this means that you're relatively near to Paul Anderson in Stroud (although you want to do all the work on the car yourself, it's useful having someone so well-regarded by the 928 community so close, just in case you want to drop in for some advice and secondhand parts) and there are several nearby 928 owners, perhaps if you posted a request on the 928uk list you'd find someone happy to let you look at a working lock mechanism. Alternatively there's even a very quiet Yahoogroup for southwest 928 owners I could point you in the direction of, most of whom seem to be in the Gloucester/Bristol/Wiltshire area, so at least you'd be in contact with local owners.

Hi :)

The OPC are wrong !!!

These days there are very few OPC`s who have anyone who ever worked on 928s...

The reason they are wrong is that they do NOT understand how the rear lock works...lol

When you turn the key it moves the brass locking tongue which as the hatch is in the locked down position is now in the BOTTOM SECTION (below the join of hatch and body)

What that means is IF you were to drill it, you would need a drill around 1 inch in DIAMETER and you would have to drill down around 3 inches and you would totally ruin both the hatch and probably the rear PU as well !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Do NOT even think about drilling from the top....

I personally would drill from the back of the PU inside the car into the lock receiver....and drill through the brass tongue from the side...

But... as someone suggested...talk to a locksmith FIRST.....ask if they do a no open no fee lol... :)

All the best Brett :)

Hi All,

I am going with the locksmith first. I have more confidence in a locksmith than my ability to remove the thing.

Will wait for advice from locksmith if he can't open it before making next move.

Now if only the three locksmiths I rang this morning would return my call

There will be a big party when this lid opens!

Loving having the car though. Having wanted one for so long since childhood, its kind of odd having one in the garage to look at.

Still can't make up my mind to restore to original condition or make it my own with aftermarket wheels, bespoke interior etc.

I think I am set on original.

Regards
Paul

Hi Brett,

Def going to take the wheels of you. Let me know when you want to do the deal. I am not desparate as its not going anywhere, but happy to sort as quickly as you want.

I can throw them in the Jeep one weekend? Let me know when works for you. (I can probably do this weekend thinking about it)

Regards
Paul

Hi Paul :)

Sunday afternoons are good for me ( this or any other), you are still welcome to borrow them or buy them for £200...they need a good clean but the tyres (Falkens) are quite good....at least a year on all four...

I can also show you my rear hatch lock and why you shouldn't drill downwards lol :)...and where you need to drill if inside....

Email me at the address in my signature and I will send you my address and postcode and mobile number etc...

All the best Brett :)
