Hi All,

New joiner today! Not new to Porsche ownership though - had a couple of 944's in the past. Loved every minute of ownership!

Now looking for a cheap 928 project. Prefer bodywork, electrics and interior work to knackered engine, but anything considered!

Have scoured Ebay, but nothing suitable has come up for the short while i have been looking.

I thought you guys might know where they are all hiding!

If I have no luck will wait and put some more cash together. Would rather buy a bit of a basket case to put it back on the road and add my own personal touch!

Any help and guidance gratefully received!

Best Regards
Paul

Thanks Jim!

Looking forward to getting more involved. I had forgotten how friendly the Porsche scene was.

Need to find that car now!

Best Regards
Paul

Hi All,

Still looking ..... Why have all the basket cases dried up on ebay?!

Thanks for everyone who has dropped me an email with sightings and advice. It is much appreciated!

Enjoy the rest of the weekend everyone.

Paul

There are a fair few 928's on Autotrader at the minute including a few I would go to view if I were looking.

With regard to "buying a basket case" I would strongly recommend against - 928's are now cheap cars. If you've been looking at prices I would suspect you have already picked up on that fact but a really cheap car is likely to need serious money throwing at it to get it running properly. If it ain't been loved the chances are it will need:

Water pump and belts £650
Engine mountings £600
Full set of dampers £1,000 (followed by full geo - £450)
MAF £350
and that's for starters

You haven't suggested what your budget is but I would be inclined to look around the £4-5,000 mark for a car that has been "sorted" by its former owner.

Look for a car that has had:
- regular oil changes and service
- Recent belts and waterpump
- New engine mountings
- New dampers
- Replacement MAF
- Evidence of flex plate being checked at annual service (if auto)
- Brake fluid flushed and replaced every 2 years
- Engine coolant flushed and replaced every 2 years

You will have a far more enjoyable experience from 928 ownership and can spend any extra cash on the luxuries like getting the air con back to working order.

Just my two penneth

Good luck with the search

Paul :D

Hi :)

I totally agree with Paul, thats all good advice.

As you can now pick up a running 928 with an MOT for around £2k...thats the way I would go....basket cases are just money drains...it could easily cost you 4 or 5 THOUSAND to get them right....

Oh and one tip for when you are buying....the Aircon NEVER EVER EVER "Just needs regassing" lol....

All the best Brett :)

Hi & welcome

I wouldn't recommend getting a wreck of a 944 & doing it up, even less a 928!

One of my group was lucky & bought a non-runner off of E Bay with the rad & other bits in the boot.
He managed to get it running & it is fine.

Hi All,

I know you all talk sense, and agree totally that it is almost certain to be a money pit.

My thoughts are I need to get an initial budget of about a grand past the wife for a starter, for what is to be a third car! (And I am still hearing about the last 'project' that sat on the drive for two years with little work being done on it)

Also - I want something to really get my teeth into rather than just a couple of tweaks and a polish if you know what I mean.

I know its a good idea to pay more for a car thats had the bits done, but I will get a great deal of satisfaction from getting the things done myself.

Ideally I would like to find a car thats had some mods and put it back to standard as well.

Sounds nuts, and probably is. To be honest I am bored looking already (too impatient!) and I might put some more cash to get a better car. Will mull it over.

Have seen quite a few with MOT for £2k ..... just can't find one with no MOT, in need of a re trim, a new wing and the fluffy dice removing for £850!

Will let you know how I get on.

Thanks all!

Regards
Paul

Hi Paul :)

Do not be put off by 928s....

Generally speaking they ALWAYS start and run as the engine and gearbox are bulletproof....mine has done 143.000 miles and is hardly run in lol...

Electrics are a pain but not serious stuff, its normally things like electric windows or boot release etc that play up.... but if you buy a 928 , make sure you also buy a multimeter lol :)

So my best advice is buy one that drives and you cannot go far wrong....

Where are you in the country as if anywhere near me on the South Coast (Bournemouth) I will happily go with you to inspect one....

And finally......my famous saying....

"When I go out every morning (daily driver) and turn the key, and that HUGE V8 rumbles into life , it puts a smile on my face for the rest of the day "

All the best Brett :)

Thanks Brett!

I am not a million miles from you. North on the A350 near Warminster.
You can guarantee any car that comes up will be North of Birmingham though. Isn't it always the way? Thanks very much for the offer, will drop you a line if its not too far away.

I have the multimeter ready, tools are lined up and garage almost cleared.

Its good advice to get one that drives. I am hoping I can as the engine is the most costly thing to repair potentially, although you do hear stories of simple fixes that get them running again.

There were a couple that went through Ebay recently. Still kicking myself for not buying at the time.

Of all the cars I have owned I always think back to my two Porsches fondly (an 86 and 88 944) The build quality was superb and such great fun to drive.
I wanted a 928 back then but the prices were a lot higher. Looking forward to seeing the differences between the two models.

Regards
Paul

Hi Paul :)

For your sort of money you wont get an S4 ...so its an S or an S2...

The best year for S2 is mine (86) they had the most powerful (310 hp) engine but with S4 brakes and suspension...

But any 4.7 is good.... the early 4.5 is ok but less powerful and more potential problems...

All the best Brett :)

Thanks, saw that one. Nice car, but not enough for me to do on it.
Looking for something thats crumbling so I can restore.

I do have a couple lined up now, so might have something in next week or so. I will be viewing one middle of next week and waiting for reply from someone else on another.

Still looking though, so any leads please fire my way!

I don't think I have found the perfect car yet, but might just buy one of the two anyway.

Thanks again!

Regards
Paul

Wheels ... I need wheels!

Have found a car, but it has no wheels (or tyres)

Anyone who has a cheap set they want to get rid of would be pleased to hear from them! Cheaper the better, I only need them to take it on and off a transporter.

Would need to pick them up from South of England ideally, but might be able to sort something out in the midlands.

Not checked ebay yet, thought I would drop a message here first.

Also - an '83 928 would have had teledials or slots?

And would 944 or 911 wheels fit as well?

Thanks!

Best egards
Paul

Hi Paul :)

I have a spare set of slots.....with legal tyres...

I will willingly lend you them...BUT, I must have them back by next Wednesday (when I need them for a week when my others are going for refurb)

All the best Brett :)

p.s 83 will be an S2 so slots not teledials.

911 wheels probably not....some 944s but not all...depending on offset etc
