Hi,

Having read the thread, I would get all the items replaced for your own peace of mind. £800 for the aforementioned parts seems about right. I think the thing to remember is that (although given the cost) prevention is cheaper than the cure!

Regards,

Ben :bounce:

Hi Everyone,

I have bit the bullet & got the garage to inspect and while there replace the Cam Chain and slipper pads. They called me once the cams were out to have a look. I was relieved to find the teeth on the cams to be good and the tensioner also in good solid order. So they are renewing Cam Belt, Balance Belt, Cam Chain & Slipper Pads and will cost me £900 all in. At least it should be fine until next Belt Change.
Another thing they found my undertray missing. Spoke to Porsche and quite expensive to get both parts of it plus fixings. Has anyone run without one or essential to sort??

Thanks

Ummm seems expensive, how many hours is that?

Undertray not essential but does keep the engine bay cleaner & on some cars assists the aerodynamics to flow air through the rad,aka keep it cool at highs peed.

Agree with Jim. Thats OTT. You still need a good spanner man!
My car has been running without an undertray for 6 months. Since I started having trouble with the power steering pump. I have a new one now but havn't had chance to fit it yet. I can't tell any difference. It doesn't seem to do a lot! but Porsche wouldnt have put it there for nothing. Still gives 35mpg+ on long runs. If you want another try the dismantlers. Porsche Apart are reasonable.

I called HARTECH re cam sprocket wear and asked him how they measure it, they said I couldnt measure it only they could....whatever....at the end of the day it not a technical device, its a sprocket, push bikes even have them. Physically look at it and look for excess wear, tear and missing teeth. Change the slippers, chain and belts/roller and forget about it.

Thing is that big old 16 valve is not a hard motor to work on, like the chap above said. If it was £500 car more people would have a go and get it done right, it was only made by a man, so it can be fixed by one, dont work yourself into a fear of it and dont let some greedy spanner man roll you over!

Baz at Hartech is usually very helpfull, I would think it's probably hard to describe by phone what is and isn't serviceable regarding sprocket wear.

A bit late but this seems like a good document that describes the camshafts, cain and tensioner.

Thanks for the advice guys but I'm still confused on what needs doing.

As far as I can see it needs a new slave chain and a new tensioner bearing ('slipper') pad. It wasnt ever the tensioner function that failed in any of these 2.500cc 944 Super-derived heads, it was the nylon bearing pad that wore. Unless you can demonstrate that the tensioner itself is faulty, then a new nylon pad will suffice.
