hello again peeps!

just got my car from the menders its been making a metal scraping metal sound since i bought it mr mechanic says it was the clutch ive had it changed and the shift is awesome, however there is a huge amount of "slack" between shifts and it bounces the car and makes a horrible noise when i drive.

the noise gets louder the faster i go so i am thinking? propshaft? or drive shafts?

any one got any ideas? i'd like not to have the embarressment of driving a knackered Porsche!

Many thanks dann :)

Hard to say without looking at the car and hearing the noise. Although if you hadn't had the clutch done I would say clutch centre spring.

Slack between gears- gear linkage?

Noise-

Gearbox? They are known to be whiney and rattle in nuetral. Try changing the gearbox oil, may or may not help.

Torque tube bearings can get noisey. Never done this job, looks like a pain. They can be damaged by hanging the gearbox off the torque tube during removal/refit.

Driveshafts (cv joints) may need replacing or more likely repacking with grease, a messy but not hard job to do, try swapping them round left to right. Only had real problems with cv joints on an astra van and they did make the car 'bounce' but they were completely crispy ducked.

Stripping the old ones out is easy. You'll need a good quality 8mm 12 point key & a decent knucklebar & a tin of brake cleaner. The brake cleaner cleans the heads of the bolts before putting the bit in. The splines are quite delicate & if you cam them out then you'll be swearing with an angle grinder getting the head off.
Halfshafts are around 180 + VAT, you'll need new bolts as well, which are about 2 quid each
CV Joints are around 50-60 each & a dirty but easy job to do. I've just done 2 sets in the past few weeks. If one is knackered then I'd strip & clean all four joints, fresh grease could save the other. Torque on the lightly bolts is 30 ft/lb or 40NM DO NOT exceed it as the bolts break AMHIK!

They will be fine, just remember the new bolts, you need 24 for the whole car. And the splined key to undo them.

Just a point. But if Mr Spanner said it was the clutch. And it wasn't. And he gave you the car back without fixing it. You need a new Mr Spanner. I think I would be asking for my money back!
