944 sound systems

So what does everyone have?

Is there any point in keeping an eye out for a spare 10 speaker system (door cards etc)

Or am I better paying a bit for a good set of speakers in the existing positions?

What do you lot run? any pictures? would love to put a concealed 10" sub in somewere as well but not sure about postioning.

Mine is on the to-do list but generally people upgrade the 4 speakers which aren't of the best quality!
I've heard of subs going in the tailgate area in custom made shallow boxes. Using 968 grilles on the front gives more depth for a speaker but has to stay 6 x 4 & in the back panels there is room for a slightly bigger round ones. It depends what you want but I'd suspect upgrading the head unit & replacing the speakers with decent stuff would make a huge difference.

when I've regrown my kidneys to replace the ones I've had to sell to pay for it I'll be looking at amps and speakers

I've been recommended earthquake subs to put under the seats so might go for that

My setup is intended to be relatively sensible (ie. not loud enough to show off with, just loud enough to sound okay when driving on the motorway in the rain).

I’ve got a Becker Grand Prix head unit, with the Becker iPod link hooked up to an iPod hidden inside the armrest. I left the rear speakers as-is and upgraded the front ones to JBL component speakers at 6x4. I fitted a 9" sub in a wooden box designed to fit the rear storage cubby on the right hand side, so it sits under the carpet flap and is undetectable. That’s run through an Alpine amp set to only output the lower frequencies, which is mounted vertically on the wall in front of the spare wheel.

The only weak point I have is those original rear speakers. At higher volume levels, it actually sounds better if I use the head unit’s fader control to cut them right down and just go with sound from the front and the sub.

I got a Dansk Well there are some 6" speakers in the back but you can't hear em with your foot down.

The speakers in my audio pack were Nokia, but it wasnt particularly impressive. I certainly wouldnt advise anyone to try to retro-fit it.

It was rubbish when it was four years old btw: so itll be dire by now!

dammit- was hoping to put my iphone in the ashtray (as the bit over it is exactly the right size and shape!) - sadly with the cable plugged in, it doesn't fit so I'm gonna have to stick it in the central armrest.

Anyone got any pics of their installations if they're particularly neat? (or other suggestions)

btw loving the x305 - and the imprint unit really makes a difference...

Having seen pics of the Becker Grand Prix in place it just looks right. The right level of period correctness - no flashing disco lights etc but with the excellent components. That's where I'm going.
Just to throw something else in - I changed my original head unit fo a new Sony one last year but I can't successfully connect the extra amp, and hence the rear speakers, that comes with the 10 speaker option. Practically the old DIN socket won't fit bit I'm informed that realistically I would need to replace the amp with something that is appropriate for newer headunits - assuming I can find it! Anyone know where it is?

Exactly the thought process I went through when fitting my iPod. I was going to put it in place of the ashtray, maybe under the original sliding cover, but there was no room for the connector. Went for the armrest/cassette holder space instead.

I routed the (very thick) Becker iPod cable down from the head unit, around the base of the gearstick area, along the side of the ashtray and through a drilled hole into the armrest space. All well hidden beneath standard trim and there's still plenty of room in the armrest space for a notebook, bunch of pens, parking meter change, etc.

Usual advice if you are not going for a full-blown system is to put in a seperate amplifier, and uprate the speakers. This will make a HUGE difference to the quality of the sound.

I've got a small (period) Rockford Fosgate unit in the right-hand storage bin in the boot, and some slightly better speakers in the front behind the standard grilles.

I have a line-in (not i-pod in) to the head unit, which is connected to a 3.5mm socket which is mounted in the central storage docket. You can plug MP3 players/Sat Navs*/other things into this and play them through the head unit, which is good.

* - I find that following Sat Nav instructions when played at decent volume through decent speakers much easier than when they are played through the tiny speaker mounted in the unit. Never understood why ...
