I have e-mailed design911 asking them for advice, and also waiting info from Strasse, so will keep you all informed. I have looked at (And are still considering) thinner wheels as well. Anything to get the car sorted so I can start enjoying it now the weather has improved!!!!

On a bright note, I was pleased to see my car on Page 5 of the new All torque, and I spy the 3.2 Turbo just behind!! Hopefully it will be there this year with it's shiny new wheels and clear lenses!!!

Have you made any progress with the wheels problem?

Oooh good eyesight (I can't believe I missed spotting my own car in the mag  )

Hope you get your wheels sorted in time for Gaydon

Well the update is......

After speaking to Design911, they have never come across this issue before and think it must be particular to my car.

I had a quote to roll the arches which was pricey, so went for a second quote. At the second bodyshop I was advised not to do it as it causes a moisture trap and will lead to premature corrosion of the arch. It was suggested that the best way forward was to get 5mm machined from the rear mounting face off the wheel..... I would then have to sort out either new nuts or studs... Any thoughts anyone??

I am still not convinced that the wheel should move that much under acceleration so I think a bit more investigation of the bushes is in order..... 6 weeks or so to sort before Gaydon!!

Bigger wheels like this will load up the suspension more. If you are getting that much toe in I don't think it is just a suspension bush issue. Machining the face of the wheel hub would be possible but I suspect will only mask the problem. Also in the event of an accident involving the rear wheels, who would you blame?

Well I am going to bite the bullet and have the arches rolled, but will put waxoyl between the crease to repel water ingress. Fingers crossed this solves it........

I think I would want to resolve why this is happening before modifying the bodywork or I would be tempted to change the wheels for some that fit better with an offset more in line with normal (ET55). As I said before I have 255/40/17 tyres on my S2 which are 17"x9j cup 2 and there is plenty of room from tyre to wheel arch.

i think rolling the arches isn't the answer, you will crack the paint, and form a rust trap, go and see if you can get some et55 wheels and save yourself some bodywork grief

Machining the wheel is a bit drastic.
First thing is to roll the arch. ALL 968,s have this done from the factory, so there should be no probs with that...
The problem is definately the offset of the rear wheels.
I HAVE come across quite a few 944,s that have this happen...
Ide be getting my £££ back + look out for a pair of rear GENUINE Porsche wheels with an ET of 55...
Problem solved...

My Dad has rolled arches , but the nearside still damages the tyre. The answer in my opinion is ET55. My cab has some 17s on with loads of room.

Thank you all very much for your help on this. I have contacted Design911 with a view of swapping the wheels for some Cup 2's that have an offset of ET55. I will let you all know how I get on!!

ET47 is not one of the more common offsets but it puts the outside edge an extra few mm further out which is obviously making all the difference in your case. Maybe you have a few factors causing problems:

As Paul says: 47mm isnt a suitbale offset for an ABS car. For a 9" rim you need at least 65mm and probably closer to 77mm. Id epect problems even if your bushes were all as-new...

I have 17x9" ET55 cup 2s on my S2 and there is plenty of room between the arch and the wheels.

Well Design911 have agreed to swap the wheels with ones with a different offset and replace the tyre. New wheels on order so should get them in about 10days or so, will let you know how it goes!!
