Can a 944 S2 dead be repaired? Cam chain broke and tentioner broke the lug off where it is bolted down, only the one. Heads is very low milage, seems a shame to scrap it just for that and a couple of bent valves..

Probably! Give Hartech http://www.hartech.org/ a ring for a start. They will have all the bits you need in stock to do it. Worth fitting new guides & oil seals at the same time. They might have some cams as well if they don't want the earth for them.
Rick Woods as I mentioned before would sort it out. (Cnc heads) It will need machining & it depends on cost. Rick could scan your head & produce one from scratch if your stuck! He copied a mobile phone for a joke. Amazing. I expect it just needs a seat wear the casting is broken & a fresh steel lug bolting on. Ring round for some prices.

I think Ive got some cams now. The tentioner broke a piece off the head, I still have it and I can push it back in place and it fits OK. Just needs welding on ! - if thats possible with the blend of Alloys that was used by Porsche. I have the valves and will get new guides fitted as required.

Perhaps things have changed; but the answer certainly used to be no, not under any circumstances. Would you really want to rely on that small web after itd been repaired, so be durable and to hold the tensioner exactly where it needed to be?

You can't weld it. Too many types of alloy & getting the right rod is hit & miss. Only ever seen alloy weld once. (Cast iron cracks when it cools.) Whether it can me machined & the lug replaced depends on how much metal is left. And how close you are to the water jacket. Can you not get a head from Porsche Apart or any of the other dismantlers? It will cost no more to recon it than the one you have. You give them yours as well & they will rob the best valves out of it. I doubt it will save you anything to repair your own. If you got some cams thats the main thing!

A good head specialist should be able to TIG it up, it is more common than you think especially on very expensive race heads. Have a word with Kevin at EMC or Barry Hart at Hartech. But it maybe cheaper & possibly better to get another head.

Its common for alloy heads to be welded.

Problem is that they need a big oven to warm the whole of the head in before welding it.

I have a mate who has welded dozens of heads

Specialists have these to replace valve seats, I suspect becoming more common these days as lots of people are having to weld the face surface on the Rover K Series heads.

Thanks for your replies, I had been told it could be 'tigged' up, anyway will speak to the right people this week and find out for sure. This car has only done 70,000 and it would be a shame to scrap such a nice head for a small issue.
