Ok - Brake warning indicator came on yesterday so I have picked up a set of pads as I was expecting to change them about now anyway. Planning to tackle this tomorrow weather permitting.

Never changed pads on a 944 so any advice gratefully accepted. I'm assuming ( as its a Porsche) that it won't be simple. Looking at PET it looks like a strange spring configuration that holds pads in place  Is it as simple as pulling spring and popping the pads out?

It is as simple so long as you dont have corrosion under the stainless plates, if you have then it becomes a pain.

Unlatch clip, withdraw pads, if you have a warning light on you'll need new sensors & if someone did the job properly before then new backing stickies.
Parts details for the 944 S2 is a 5mb download here http://www.pelicanparts.com/PartsLookup ... n_Page.htm the 944 is about half way down.

Job done after a bit of fun removing the old Red EBC pads that were incredibly tight in the calipers.

I suspect that as the Red EBC pads (and the new Greens that I have fitted) are not official Porsche parts the backing plate is not exactly to size. Anyway to alleviate the problem I carefully ground the backplate down about 1.5mm at each end with a bench grinding wheel and the new pads went in a treat.

Car stops nice and quickly :D

Sounds like plate lift - corrosion between the plates and caliper?

Why else wouldnt the pads fit? Its a known bodge to grind the calipers down in this case.

Yup - wot Rich said :(

Pads should be able to pull out and push back in easily with your fingers. Any tightness means the calliper plates are starting to lift and squeeze the pad.

I agree - the "oh yeah" comment was to the corrosion :D

I will do a caliper re-furb later but for now I needed new pads in a hurry. The grinding down was in preference to removing the calipers and removing the steel sping plate for a clean up etc. Looking at the screws holding the plate in position I suspect they would be very difficult to remove and possibly need drilling out.

I've added it to the list of "jobs to be done"

They need a lot of heat to loosen the thread lock compound that 'glues' them in place.

Rick Cannell has a copy of the 911&Porsche World guide on his website, about half way down this page:

Just been quoted £90 plus vat per caliper for Porscheshop to change the plates.
