you guys are awesome - having this problem as well

at least I know now when to stop before I hamfistedly break things.

think my lifter arms aren't retracting fully by the sounds of things...

whilst we're on the subject of sunroofs - my latches are really really squeaky whilst driving - can anyone recommend anything to shut the damn things up?

If you mean the rear hatch latches they can be adjusted. But are often siezed up. A new pair will set you back £25 & you need the T nuts as well. Or (&) you may need a new boot seal. Whats it look like? Also check the seal frame to glass. This separates over time. The only answer is to take the thing off & remove the frame. Clean it all up & reseal. Theres a good article on http://www.clarks-garage.com/ Did it on mine but it takes a bit of time. Now squeak & rattle free. Sometimes you can find a good rear glass second hand but often there as bad as the one yo take off. :)

As JJ says the pins wear, have a look at the shoulders on the pins, they should have a sharply defined edge, if they don't them is knackered. Swapping them can be a challenge as they seize badly. Adjust them in until they don't latch then wind them back a quarter of a turn. Greasing the latches will help as well. Turn the key in the lock & watch down the 'ole & watch the wire latches move.

I actually meant the front latches on the sunroof were squeaking - although in my (failed) quest to try and get it off I unscrewed some of the fastenings and then put it back together again.

Now it squeaks an awful lot less.

btw hi to whoever owns the red C-reg 944 I passed on the M1 earlier today

I tried this method and it appears as if the n/s sunroof motor is a little lazy on my 1991 944 Turbo, any suggestions I don't want to break it but would love to be able to remove the roof in summer.

The same motor is also lazy when opening the roof into the tilt position. The o/s motor retracts as expected but the n/s does not.

Thanks in advance,
Aido

Just to correct you there is only one motor, in the n/s of the hatch behind the carpet.
It sounds like the gears on the n/s are missing some teeth these are above the panel at the back of the sunroof adjacent to the hatch.
This is the best I've seen on the 944 sunroof, I trained on aircraft mechanics & electronics & this has to be the most bl00dy complex way to operate a sunroof I know of

sounds like gears, a bit fiddly to do, but gears are cheap, about £12 the pair

Don't get too excited about driving with the roof panel out; the wind noise with the deflector up is horrendous. And, trying to replace the panel single handed if its windy is tricky if you want to avoid damage.

I decided to take my roof panel out today and was unable to. The motor wouldn't release the roof in acc position 1. It worked last time I tried and have no idea what has caused this to happen. Is there an easy to follow check list to pinpoint the problem? I read the guide on other sites but tbh it's a little beyond me. The switch must work as it will lift in the locked position, could it be the relay? Is this even what the relay controls?

The sunroof system is very simple just takes a bit of work to understand it took me 2 years :D

If you can raise it but it does not release then I would guess rear limit switches are at fault
With sun roof closed apply pressure on the 2 limit switches that are ganged together they become loose, if you hear the click then this is the issue press and tighten the bolt

This assumes of course your operating it correctly and there is a fault :?

I am 100% certain i am operating it correctly as it worked up til recently. I read something about these limit switches, where exactly are they located?
