Has anyone tried this Ametech engine treatment that claims to cure your smoky engine, improve fuel consumption and give better performance?
My 944 uses a bit of oil, not uncommon, and smokes a bit when above 5000 revs.
Just wondered if this stuff was any good if not will just keep putting the oil in.

As I suspected better off just putting the oil in.
Just giving the old gal a pull through including some fresh oil and thought I would ask.
Done the front ball joints as well, not so bad :D
Now for the fuel filter.

Hi Guys.
Well, I don't know precisely why anybody is laughing at the Ametech treatment.
Listen, TR7V8,.....I have no idea what Snake Oil is, but I can assure Andy, that this stuff cured the smoking in my 924 IMMEDIATELY!!! I was absolutely gobsmacked.
Both my engineer (he'll kill me if I call him a mechanic!) and I were amazed. To the extreme that I had all of the oil seals, bearings etc. to do an engine rebuild and I have kept ALL of the bits in in two crates in his workshop because there was no point in trying to repair something which was already (UNBELIEVABLY) fixed.
To the extreme, that he asked me to order some of this gear for his car. This guy, BTW, is not a hammer and spanner, arches type mechanic! He preps cars for racing etc.
So, Andy, DO buy it, and just make sure that you use bog standard supermarket-type engine oil to allow the Ametech to do its job.

Are you listening Jim :)

If this stuff is so good and the distributor is so confident in his product, surely it comes with a money back guarantee

I think it does...

One of my colleagues at work has put some in his old Audi 90 20v and swears that it has made a huge improvement. However, one of our local members with an 944 S2 is also trying some at the moment. I'm sure he'll add his thoughts once it's been in for the prescribed length of time.

Long ago I had a friend with a tired engine. It was a mini. I put STP in it. Well he couldn't aford to rebuild it. The STP stopped it knocking & it went on to live another 3 years & 40K miles. So long as STP was added at each oil change. It's a bodge but it works. If the engine was worked hard it still over heated. But it did extend it's life. I bet Amtech is similar. It's no substitute for an engine rebuild.

As stated I tried 750mls of Amtech in my S2 to see if it would help with the tappet noise I have had diagnosed as needing replacement cam followers (16x). I put it in around 350 miles ago and it does state it can take up to 500 miles to see any effect and 1000 miles before fully effective.

I put mine in just after an oil change and engine flush as per instructions and initially the oil pressure went mad only reaching 4.5/5 bar when revved very high whereas it normally sits at 4.5/5 bar even when hot once over 1500rpm. This as you can imagine was rather worrying however after a quick run out of around 30miles the oil pressure has stabilised to what it was before so 3.5-4 bar on tickover when hot and 4.5/5 bar over 1500rpm.

I can't say it has made the engine quieter as yet, but although my car hardly used any oil previously it would when revved up to 6000rpm blow a little smoke out of the rear for the first few times, this has stopped and the engine does seem to rev more freely.

I will add more details when I get the required mileage covered but to date it has stopped any smoking at high revs and definately improved the engine response and before people tell me it is because of the oil change I had ran the car for 100 miles after the change before adding the Amtech.

We've put it in a high mileage 924 Turbo and it seems to have done the trick - there's no smoke at all now once the engine's warmed up so whilst I was a bit dubious about it it does seem to do what it says on the bottle!

this bit of the description made me laugh;

Quote:
Ametech Engine Restore Oil contains micro particles of CSL copper silver lead in a honeycomb matrix -under a microscope they look like the inside of chocolate malteser balls! These particles vary between 2micron and 16micron in diameter and find their way to every hot spot and wear point in the engine. The CSL particles will repair everything they touch: cylinders, pistons and rings, valve guides, crankshaft, main bearings, camshaft, bushings and bearings, oil pump gears and bushings, and bring dimensions back to very near to original specifications.

So there you go, use this and your engine will last forever as any mechanical wear will be magically repaired by tiny maltesers.  :drunken:

Joining the thread again!

J.J. I wasn't suggesting that it is a substitute for an engine rebuild. I was merely trying to defend something which has worked for me and to let Andy and anybody else know that it does, indeed, to what it claims.
I will eventually get round to the rebuild. It is just that I have done SO MUCH work on the car (with all the accompanying expenses!) that when the Ametech (to my amazement) got rid of the smoking, which was completely breaking my squigglies, I decided to put the rebuild on hold!
Briefly, so far , work done......Weight reduction project (all panels fibreglass, including 944 rear quarters); lowered suspension; complete new carpet set from the States; new bucket seats (rears binned as part of weight reduction); Powerflex bushes all round; new ball joints etc, all round; 4 into one exhaust manifold header, going into stainless steel; large throttle body; adjustable fuel pressure regulator; oil catch tank;air box binned and replaced with Raid cone filter (the whole induction system had to be moved across to make space for it!); 17" X 7 1/2 alloys all round; bridge spoiler; Nytrex 10012 V8 Nitrous system.....blah, blah blah!!! Before I bore you all crapless, I hope you get my general drift!!!
Wow! I'm off to clear my head for a bit now after all that!...VVVvvrrrrrrooooooooooommmmmmmm!!!!
