Idiot question I know...jacked the car up last night for a quick look underneath...can I use the round bits just behind the front wheel arches to place my axel stands? Also is the oil sump relatively far back...I can see a plug of some description facing out towards the offside of what I think is the oil sump (one half has a ribbed appearance). There is a protective tray further forward...I was expecting to have to remove this?
Yes you can but you should use an adapter to fit the jack otherwise you'll crush the metal. HOWEVER I'd never advise any one to jack on the jacking points on an old car. I use the rear wishbone/castor mount at the front where the two bolts are visible on the chassis rail. AT the rear I use the torsion tube where it meets the rear trailing arm.
As for the oil, yes it's a 16mm AF hex thats on the lowest ribbed part of the sump. It depends which undertray you have, mine has a two piece one & I have to remove the main part under the engine. Earlier cars have a short undertray & I think you can get away with it.
