can anyone give an opinion on car alarms - I'm uncomfortably aware that I'm about to fork out £400 for my old faulty alarm to be replaced and wondering if I should do a bit of homework first about what they're going to replace it with!

currently the alarm fitter has suggested an Autowatch alarm

can anyone give me an opinion - are they much of a muchness or should I be a bit more choosy about this?

to be honest as long as its got a working immobiliser and doesn't go off at 3am to annoy my neighbours I'm reasonably happy. Insurance insists on Cat 1 hence need the alarm.

thanks!

avoid clifford, I use toad - great alarms.

Also - read the info carefully, they come with lots of useful options you may want to use, such as spare buttons on the remote can turn on headlamps, auto locking, total closure, worth looking into and having it all done together rather than just a basic install option.

My brother had a Cat 1 Toad alarm fitted to a Golf show car last year for less than £300 and that was at the bodyshop too. Autowatch aren't top class alarms as far I remember.

ok I'm going for a Toad Ai606

Northants Auto Parts quoted me £350+vat for removal of existing alarm and fitting the new one with a basic install
£600+ vat for total closure, headlights, boot release etc

having just been tapped for a hefty bill of minor repairs I'm going to get the full install with modules later and just do the basic install for now

thanks guys - really appreciate the quick advice!

Don't bother with total closure. Mine did that once on the ramps in an mot bay. Had to go home for the spare keys. Just a disaster waiting to happen.

i think total closure needs another module... the headlamps on a switch is useful though...

yeah it does need another module - and I think given the warning I'll give it a miss then

the fitters opinion seemed to be that it wouldn't work on the sunroof anyway

tbh just an alarm that works and doesn't go off at 3am will seem like a miracle
