Hey chaps,

Im trying to find somewhere that will provide Toyo R888 track tyres for the 944, does anyone have any good links?

Does not necessarily have to be toyo's i h ave head that Advan A040's are good too, off course if anyone has any experience of track tyres on their 944 i'd be more than happy to listen to stories of their experiences

I have just sold two 255/40/17 Avon ZZRs which are basically a cut slick tyre made from the same compound as the Group N cars use. I know people who have used these on 911s to good advantage in the dry not much use in the wet, they are for sale at BMTR around £200 ea http://www.racecarnewmedia.com/bmtr/intro.asp. I have seen Toyo R888 at Camskill http://www.camskill.co.uk/ but have never tried these. From what I have heard and know the Avon's are a better dry tyre but hard to get hold of usually thro Avon Sport.

I have mailed Camskill about the R888, i get a nice discount from the RX8 owners club through them as well so fingers crossed they will be a good price

I guess i should get a lower profile tyre as well for the track - something like 215/50/R15?

Following on from David's post BMTR give a club discount ( just provide club membership number) and are also heavily involved in supporting motor sport

They may be able to help you out if you have problems getting what you need elsewhere

Id put the money towards new suspension. If you do get grippy tyres then theyll only reveal even more short comings in the original dampers...

With good dampers youll be able to enjoy driving the car on Nang Kang tyres.

944 Man, i'm enjoying driving it just now, they tyres on it are really low budget jobbies tho and as its a track car primarily i'm getting a second set of wheels to fit track orientated rubber too.

Just changing parts incrementally to see what difference they make to the car ultimately getting to a point where its fun and quick(ish).

New brakes are a must tho!

I have to agree with Simon I'm afraid. I personally wouldn't start with track tyres as a first mod as all it will do is massively increase the load you're putting on the suspension and brakes.

I've never owned a Lux but I'm told their charm is in their lightness and balance, and that being the case you don't want to upset it with overly sticky tyres.

Anyway: I was going to say something about improvements when you stated that you were doing a track day the following day. I was going to post a link to GAZ suspension; which I thought that youd find useful/interesting. I really wouldnt waste the best part of £400 on new tyres just yet, nor would I worry about altering the brakes. Those ATE calipers came straight off the first (260bhp) 911 Turbo, so theyll be more than up to stopping a 160bhp 944. If they arent working as well as youd hope then Id suggest the following: 1] see that both calipers are in good condition and if not then refurbish them (kits cost about £8 per caliper); renew the flexible hoses, ideally replacing them with steel braided parts (all round! Not just the fronts...); renew the brake fluid and replace the discs and pads (avoid Zimmerman discs, buy ATE/Textar and buy Pagid pads). 2] change the way that you use the brakes: brake as hard as you can for the shortest period that you can. Overheating is usually caused by riding the brakes for too long.
