Yeah, I’m very relieved. Was having visions of being told the work needed would cost more than just buying a reconditioned lump from somewhere and doing a swap. My engine was running beautifully, didn’t want to lose it!

Assuming you're talking about a 944 I might be able to help you out on the starter motor front. Going to tackle mine today so won't know what working bits I have free until later on but the starter that came on the car works fine but the solenoid is dead, whip the solenoid off yours and it should work fine.

The starter pinion has a one way clutch on it, if they get flooded the grease gets washed out & they die. Find a good local aut electricain & they'll rebuild it for less money than a complete replacement.

Thanks guys, but as this is all coming through on an insurance claim, I’m going to go with all new parts. Might as well!

To be honest, I think if I tried for a new engine the insurance would call it a write-off. My agreed value is only £6,250. Besides, the engine runs beautifully. It’s so, so quiet and smooth. Would be a shame to lose that known quality and risk a fresh start with something sourced from a breaker.

I didn’t even think of that. Originality isn’t exactly top of my priorities list …
