Daughters restoration project - 1983 924 - Fuel pump relay?

Hello All.

Long time member on here, but have not posted for a good while. I used to post a lot when i had my 944 turbo and since then, i have had a Boxster S. I have a 996 now and will ask some questions about this soon. My daughter bought her first car, its a 1983 Porsche 924 and we are getting it ready for the road, together.

Yesterday, the fuel pump relay gave up (we think). No noise from the fuel pump at all, but bridging the terminals made it work ok. So my question is, where can i find a replacement relay? It seems that these are NLA. The one we have has 'made in West Germany' on it, so i suspect it is old!!

We have seen Design 911 selling the ones in the clear case - are these solid state and are they any good?

You might want to try the Heritage parts centre before splurging out with Design 911. They have listed a replacement part by URO- 993-615-227-01 however it appears to be on back order with them. A quick google search with that part number yields an Amazon seller in the UK with the part in stock and at a lower price than Heritage.

No experience of solid state relays but it was I believe, one of the recommended upgrades - that or always having a spare DME relay in the glove box!

Might be worth popping the cover off the old fuel pump relay and cracking out the soldering iron. The relay became intermittent on my 924 which resulted in weird running issues (suspect it would have 100% died at some point) but when I removed the cover I could see some of the solder joints were looking old. Reflowing all the solder joints I could reach solved the issues and its still going fine 2 years later.

New ones are really hard to find and usually silly money - this guy has built alternatives but no idea how reliable they are:

As Russ says, opening it up & giving it a clean & resolder could work. The relay or its principles were used on other cars with early Bosch injection, so I'd have thought it would may be possible to use one of those.
I had a Renault 25 V6 and the fuel pump relay gave trouble, which eventually was traced (very expensively) to not just the relay but a wiring fault. That was Bosch injection.
I suspect you know but the theory behind it is it takes an ignition pulse to turn on. So in the event of an accident the pump (which is high pressure) stops running. In other words stops feeding a possible fire!
