I carried out checks for power at each end of the live L/h sided strut and the power was at each end so I then checked for earth on the R/h side earth strut and there was no earth at the top end of the strut to the window terminal. The earth was only okay at the bottom end of the strut.
I then ran a new earth to the top end of the R/h strut (keeping the wiring as it should be on the struts)and hey-presto the hrw has power.
This has been driving me mad having no hrw and Iam sooooo pleased that it works ok again.
Thanks so much to everybody who helped me with advice to track the problem down, the input has been invaluable and shows how fantastic the forum can be for idiots like me
