Oil pump seal is behind the crank pulley, but as it’s all clean and shiny in there should not be hard to find

Yep.

On the plus side, car started easily. Engine was running long enough to exploit any other leaks and the source of the leak was unequivocal. Access wasn't too bad.

I finished off installing the carpets and seats. There's little to do now.

Most of that brown BTW, is actually from the soundproofing. There was very little rust.

Right, gearbox is in and more or less hooked up.

I'm having a lovely time adjusting the fully (and too) adjustable 'Precision shift' rear gear linkage. It's a PITA.

After spending roughly 15 minutes (that was enough) on the gearbox mount, I took another tack.
This is my revised gearbox mount replacement procedure. You might think it a bit long winded but it turned out to be a lot more straightforward.

1. Jack car up onto axle stands.
2. Remove fuel pump/filter assembly and unplug reverse light switch connection.
3. Remove off side wheel.
4. Support gearbox with trolley jack.
5. Undo selector rod bolt and slide it off rear gear linkage.
5. Remove the bracket from gearbox to gearbox mount in it's entirety.
6. Remove the 2 cross member mount bolts
7. Lower gearbox enough to get clearance to remove cross member. About 50mm (2 inches in old money).
8. Slide cross member (replete with gearbox mount through the wheel arch, rotating 90 deg clock wise half way.
9. Remove mount
10, Install new mount to cross member (easy peasy).
11. Slide cross member back in.
12. Attach gearbox mount to gearbox bracket.
13. Attach bracket to gearbox.
14. Raise gearbox on trolley jack.
15. Bolt in cross member and..
Put the rest back together.

It took me about 1 hour (if you don't add the 15 mins faffing with the mount before I decided to give up and try something else).
If you add the fact that I already had the fuel pump/filter assembly out, I suppose the job would be roughly 2 hours by this method and a helluva lot less contortion, battling with tricky clearances etc.

Tomorrow finish box linkage adjustment.
Put centre console (and install new gear stick rubber boot - wahey).
Attach exhaust
Attach ECU
Attach battery
Put all fluids in*. Gearbox was done off the vehicle.
Give it a go!

*Not power steering fluid - still haven't got the new reservoir.

Bit late but the Only944 shift from Kyle in the States is superbly made and faultless in operation. Also a lot cheaper than the one I supect you have.

I did get the front shifter for roughly the same, add postage and customs and it would be more.
I didn't want the 'short shift' as I wanted to keep the feel of the box the same so I bought the 'precision shift' from JMG.

I just rebuilt mine with a new nylon bush from WPO now partwerks.de, got the rubber seals for the bush from OPC, made a new cross link from a stainless steel ships turnbuckle, shift is smooth precise and only cost £35 to do

I got the 9x front shifter and modified the tube to take the 968/993 nylon bushes. The precision shift died pretty quickly (design now changed I notice) and the stick would not fit (rod too short for circlip) Cost me a fortune but I'm happy now.

Went out for a 30 mile drive in the 68, just to warm the oil up a bit

Yeah - takes about 20 mins to warm the oil up in the 997 and I keep it to less than 4000 rpm. I'm glued to the rev counter and the oil pressure gauge.
Was meant to go to Croft in June. That'll have to wait.
It will be interesting* to see how the 'newer' engine does in the 944.
*For want of a better word, i'm actually gagging. Hopefully get the infamous 30 x 48 on Tuesday.

I pushed it out of the garage yesterday so that I could wax the 997. I clay barred it and then used the Cleanser polish. Interesting smell. I can honestly say that it's not as deep a shine as the Fusso99 sealant (followed by the Sonax) but as a paint 'restorer', it's fantastic and dead easy to apply.

Tomorrow, the 944 gets the same treatment.
