Right, so for all you lot who have got bored and gone off to make some tea, I really am at what did you do to your (insert appropriate variant here) today.

With current circumstances dictating that Waylander would be providing consultancy services (and technical support), the house elf was once again press-ganged, I mean asked to assist in the refitting of the engine mounts and the refurbished crossmember. I had already pre-installed and bolted up the mounts in anticipation of getting this done prior to discovering the missing section of heat shield however, this would prove to be something of a mistake.
With space created around the car, the crossmember was offered up and it was immediately apparent that where the engine had been supported by a lifting beam on the front lifting eye, it had developed a lean to the drivers side of the car and the oil filter was acting as a stop in preventing it turning any more.
A piece of 1/2" ply suitably cut to size, placed under the sump and my trusty ex RAC trolley jack, then saw the engine lifted slightly and take on a more standard stance. The Crossmember was offered up once more and whilst I could get one of the engine mount bolts in place, everything else was out by a mile. Hmmmn.... time for tea.....
Technical support was also contacted and words of encouragement were ministered along with 'you need to back everything off so you have as much space to play with as possible'. We had also watched our German friend Irinna25661 on you tube, replace the mounts on a 944S2 cab and noted the use of a jack to raise the crossmember.
With everything backed off, the crossmember was offered up once again and much to our amazement, this time the bolt holes lined up on the passenger side and we could screw the bolts in a precious few turns. The engine was then jacked up a little more and this meant that the engine mount bolt holes lined up on the drivers side so we could now put those bolts in. With some more ply liberated, another jack was used to lift the crossmember. This started to lift and turn the engine back to a more normal position and made everything line up so we could get all the bolts in. All in all, probably took us a couple of hours including fitting the often overlooked engine mount heat shield that secures to the R/h side of the crossmember- I had bought a new one as in common with many things on my car, the original was AWOL.
The house elf deemed that as the crossmember was in and the engine resting on new mounts, the lifting beam could be removed and put away. With this done it was a good time to stop for some lunch in the glorious sunshine.

The steering rack was installed after lunch with no drama followed by torquing up all bolts to the settings specified- thanks are due to Crank case for confirming one setting that I could not find and special thanks to Waylander for his invaluable assistance and advice, I am not sure so much progress would have been made without it.

Very nice- have to come & do mine when social distancing ends :)

Only got as far as priming the steel water pipe today after having de rusted & Hydrate 80’d it yesterday. Going to have to wait on the topcoat as I can’t quite decide on the colour ( and I’m out of anything other than silver) but I’m leaning towards satin black........

Snap ! I to spent Saturday replacing engine mounts . First time attempted while on the car . Usually I have the engine bolted to the subframe before installing together in the car .
Again there was one point it looked as though nothing was going to line up but by dropping the engine a little onto the mount it gave it enough compression to pry them into place . This was to replace the semi solid engine mounts I originally installed , not a wise decision for a road car .
While servicing the other car , my accomplice was intrigued to see the use of my very expensive Porsche special tool . I was surprised by this as I thought everyone used them and he has plenty of experience around a 944 . I aids removal and much less chance of cross threading so here's a picture for anyone not using it .

I've got a few plug sockets, think they've all got the rubber. I do tape the socket onto the extension for recessed plugs though, just in case the socket sticks on the plug.

Must just be me then with my paranoia of cross threading the spark plug in the head.
The sheets just to keep the dust of a spare engine .

In the pic it looks like the garden hose goes through the sheet to fit the plugs?

This is what can happen if you cross thread a spark plug .Caused a serious fire . I bought the head like it and managed to get it repaired .

Replaced the headlining over the last two weeks. It took about an hour to get it all out, but several days to fit the replacement. Surprisingly tricky to get it all to fit. I got some navy blue vinyl from Amazon that's a pretty good match. Problem now is it makes the rest of the interior look a but grubby. Taking out and refiting the rear quarter windows turned out to be very easy.
As not much else to do in lockdown I have repaired the clock. Bought the kit from Frazerpart- bit fiddly but like new again

Next weeks project is fitting a new radiator. The old one has a leak near the top. Radweld just isnt working this time :-(

On a seperate note, I am considering wrapping the car. It is Alpine White and mostly pretty good, but it has had a few repairs and touch ups over the years. I am thinking having it wrapped in a pearlescent white - so no colour change and a bit of fun. Any thoughts comments welcome.

have you had a quote for a total wrap, a man I know had his black sport wrapped mint green, the cost was over 2K

I have had a roll of material for a new headlining for about 3 years, I just cant work up the courage to do it, as once you start there is no going back, and the 968 rear quarter windows are bonded in

I have done a few clocks now and its easy but fiddly, some times you have to do it more than once to get all the digits to light corrrectly

I did the clock repair...
Then I did it again. Then it worked.
Electrical contact cleaner, some Q tips and a fiddle.

...and to go on a mini circle: found a repair kit on the glove box of a donor car I bought. (I was considering it also, as a track car).

It was a 944 2.5 lux for spares that was wrapped that I bought. Really didn't like the disparity between the wrap and the interior, under bonnet etc. It also didn't have the sheen or depth of paint and the overlap in the door wells was an eyesore.

I'd take chipped old paint instead of a wrap any day of the week.

Do a good detail - you can really transform old paint if you know what you're doing (and you've got the right stuff).
