GAZ gold are fully adjustable and about 75 quid each for rears. Mine were 50 quid 9 years ago and still going strong. Absolutely masses of adjustment hard to soft, about 48 clicks!

Aren't the Gaz shorter than standard and require the car to be lowered? Think the B6 are standard and a straight swap in.

The fronts definitely are but wasn't sure the rears were the same though it would make sense.

I completely forgot about Gaz shocks, there was a far east brand that I can't remember that make shocks for the 944 as well but everything I've read says they are terrible quality and don't last long.

Still haven't fitted my Bilsteins, too scared that either the bolt won't come undone or I uncover some hidden corrosion

the top bolt is easy, the bottom can be very tight indeed, but its the only bolt that had copperslip from the factory

and the crap ones were KYB

Yes KYB - must be tempting for a lot of people as they are super cheap.

It's the top bolt I'm afraid of as it goes through the wheel arch into the shock top mount, I'm keeping my fingers crossed there is no bad corrosion - looks OK visually though.

You were right - the part of the arch where the top bolt goes through does look strange but I realised it is meant to be like this after I removed it so as to recess the bolt head and keep it away from the wheel and tyre. Top mounts were fine with just a little surface rust which I can deal with another time, I'd even bought new bolts, the old ones were perfectly reusable but I stuck the new ones in as I had them. Car feels great now - hadn't driven it much prior to changing them though but they did look like the originals so was definitely worth it!

So, you just changed the rear B6 shocks & it feels better still with the factory fronts? was thinking of doping that until I get the chance to do the front struts.

you shoud do the botton bolts up to spec with weight on the wheels, to stop it twisting the bushes in the ends of the shocks too much

My fronts were replaced not too long ago - feels fine and balance feels OK, been out for a couple of spirited drives

Good shout hadn't thought of that - next time I'm in the garage will get it up on ramps and loosen and re-tighten the bolts.

always amazes me when people moan about 'soggy' handling of the 944, and you ask have any suspension components every been changed? No - it's all original! 30+yr old suspension regardless of mileage is bound to be soggy.

Glad you got it done and can start to appreciate better the characteristics of the car

Changed my rears for B6 that was an improvement, then I replaced all the rear ARB bushes that made a huge difference almost cured the wallow in high speed long corners like motorway slip ramps

The next step would be inner trailing arm bushes and spring plates, they are all 30 years old and shagged out
