Im currently on the search for a barrel after some axxhole tried to break in to my car with his trusted screwdriver .. I can pick one up on ebay but... Will a new barrel affect central locking/ Im guessing it will have a separate key, and are there any alternatives?, a vw barrel or a blank?? any help would be appreciated, anyone selling would also interest me.

It shouldn't make any difference to your central locking.

Also, they are very easy to record to your existing key.

If you strip the barrell down you will see there are 3 to 4 different types of wafers, that can be set in different configurations for different key profiles. If you are lucky you will be able to re-jig the existing ones to suit your old key, worst case you may need two barrels to get enough of the correct wafers to suit your key.

I did the same when I changed my hatch lock. I probably have some photos somewhere that might help to explain.

Here are a couple of pics to show you what I mean.

With the barrell stripped you will have a selection of wafers and springs (I don't have a picture of these unfortunately), the idea is that you put them in the correct order such that when the key is pushed in, the wafers (the gold tabs you can see) sit flush in the barrell:

I only had enough wafers to match up six out of the seven, but that was acceptable for me.

Can someone tell me how the door lock barrel is held in place?
Mine just keeps coming out!
I have a pair of door handles spare. I hope to shift the wafers around to fit my key* and replace my existing one's which may be better then repairing the existing one's.

*Is this the same process to match the ignition and rear hatch to one key?

If you are buying a new barrel make sure you get the one for central locking, there is a difference, you can guess how I know!

I have a pair of the same central locking handles and the they look identical bar 'Porsche' indented lettering.

I presume you need get full access to the handle. I have previously changed the micro switch and the plastic connector rod so I am familiar with the process of removing the handle. Took me hours to orientate the rod and connect it. Took me even longer to get the door open after it shut with the handle disconnected

Must remember to tie a cloth around the catch plate (properly).

I strongly advise not connecting the door barrel rod to the catch and using the central locking to get in to car (you can still get in through the boot in the case of the battery dying). As has been previously noted it is very easy to break into the car with a screwdriver in the lock.

I see. So sticking a screw driver in the lock with it physically disconnected, will not open the door? But if the screwdriver rotates the barrel, does this not operate the central locking?
