If you have the facilities try out the Clark'es Garage tests which should reveal electical continuity problems.When my new engine was fitted the connections to the sender had been reversed, shoudn't have happened as they are different connectors but that gives funny readings. Best answer is to use a mechanical guage. Removing the sender is awkward, I used a bent motorcycle spanner and an Irish screwdriver. If the sender is good and an open circuit gives max reading, then a short circuit would give zero. Removing the instrument binacle needs care and a good read up first, loads of write ups on tint. A good oportunity to improve illumination with leds, bacofoil the reflectors etc. My money is on the sender or a short in the wiring somewhere.
