Last year I advertised my 944S and had a reasonable amount of interest. There were the usual "would you take a tenner plus a Mars bar" offers and even someone who asked if he could pay monthly!! The most genuine person viewed twice and desperately wanted the car but his parking application for where he lived in London was rejected so he had to pull out.

Anyway, I thought the ad had expired but I've had an enquiry from a chap in Malta who claims to import classic cars. He comes across as quite knowledgeable but anyone can seem that over an email.

He wants his spotter in the UK to view the car. I have advised that any deal would be cash only, and the cash would be checked at a bank before any keys etc handed over. He is fine with this.

I've sold two of my vehicles before to people in Europe before using the above precautions and both went well.

So has anyone had experience dealing with the Maltese?

After a recent event or two I'd take bank transfer any day of the week these days. Once it's in your bank it's as good as gold anyway, plus you have no fears of the cash being fake etc.

I know you are going to the bank but why faff around when you don't have to?

The chap from Malta just called, said he has a buyer lined up already. He's HPI'd the car and seems happy. His UK contact is going view and if happy sort the deal. He said its up to me how I get paid, whatever I choose he will arrange. Seems ok so far.

Wasn't actually planning on advertising the car again so all a bit sudden

The name is not familiar.

So with the cash burning a hole in your pocket/bank account what are you buying next ?

I had a call from the UK contact, he is based in Kent and his business is transporting cars abroad. He said most of his business is with Malta currently and has dealt with the chap before. Seems a lot of Porsches are going over there, on his last visit he took a non-sunroof manual box 928.

Anyway, I've been spoilt for the last couple of years as I'm still looking after my mates 997 C4S and due to this I may not have bonded with the 944 as much as I could've done, its hard to beat the noise of a flat six :D

So with this in mind I am either going to start saving for a 996 or start off with a 3.2 Boxster and see how I get on.

I'd like to go back to a bike but the Mrs would kill me

Regarding the Boxster rav here has bought one and seems pretty smitten with it.:

I sometimes think about buying one TBH but the practicality of the M3 wins. It's strange as I reckon the Boxster would be a cheaper car to run.

I'm going to wait till the sale goes through before looking as I don't want to view something and then get let down.

If I go for a Boxster it'll have to be the S. I've ridden sports bikes for the last 20 years so I need to have the model with the most torque and bhp :D

I bought the 944 to replace the bike after having to give it up and whilst I'll never get the thrill of a bike I just feel I can't get as much enjoyment out the 944 as compared to a Boxster or 996, in the way I want to drive. My 944 will be 30 yrs old in May and I treat it with kid gloves, and that's not how I want to be. Don't get me wrong, I look after my cars better than anything, always warm them up etc :D

Anyway, will see what happens in the next week or so...

a 3.2 Boxster is a fab car, I had one last year and sold it to a friend and he is loving it .
I now have a 2.7 Boxster and while it doesn't have that initial power off the line, it's still amazing fun out in the twistys

I'm pretty sure Rav also sold the 944 he had just before the boxster to Malta. A quick search may give more info.
ETA it did

I know there were no issues with this transaction but I don't know if it was the same person.

I'm not concerned about the deal, I'll take precautions with any transfer and the chap due to visit next week said he wouldn't expect to take the car until I'm happy the money is in my bank. It'll be from a UK bank using the faster payment service which I believe is not reversible once it's confirmed in my account.

Well the car went yesterday, no issues at all with payment and the chap was pleased with it.

Now the search begins for a replacement..... :o
