Has anyone had any success with using neoprene gaskets to seal in rear light clusters rather than use masses of silicone? I have managed to find some gaskets for sale in the States - Atlanta and Pelican - but shipping costs etc will make these expensive.
Do Porsche still sell these? The katalog doesn't have a part number indicating that this is not available any longer.

I searched high and low for my 944, Auto Atlanta were the only people who stocked the gaskets. Even then I had to wait about 3 weeks for them to come into stock.

They're pretty basic! I can't see why neoprene wouldn't do the job.

I'd get the proper mastic from Porsche TBH. It's not *that* tricky to use Tor even that messy or expensive; it seems like it will never harden either; It's way easier than taking silicone out of a gun if you ask me. I've even used it in some areas of the Clio where it was a doddle to apply (let's just say my car no longer leaks from the boot like many Clios do and hopefully won't again (boot stop buffer seals for anyone wondering;)).

I suspect I'll end up using some on the Escort ; that car has a couple of water leaks but it has been doing its best at avoiding going outdoors including having a flat battery. OTOH I didn't start it for almost 4 months...

Why not use the correct type of seal? Once you have cleaned all the old sealant out of the recess in the light cluster this stuff just pushes into it, then press onto car so you can get the securing nuts started then slowly tighten them all a little at a time allowing any excess sealant to squeeze out until the light unit is properly secured back in place.

This is the stuff i used from ebay

I use butyl panel sealing tape. Comes on a roll, never sets, not messy to apply.

I used Armaflex tape cut down to size, works a treat (might have had to double it up) Its not that cheap to buy though but if you know anyone who is a cellar technician for the pub trade they would be able to help you out

I have quite a lot of the proper Porsche stuff and would be happy to send you enough to do the lights if you want to make a sensible donation to a charity of my choice. PM me if you wish to do so.

Having said that, it's nothing special and indistinguishable from the cheapo stuff easily available on eBay.

Agreed. Some however have had issues getting the right diameter and sometimes have doubled up the mastic :).

But it is a great gesture. I'd do the same but I doubt I have enough left to do the job! However, seeing as the Clio has used a bit I reckon it will only be a matter of time before the Escort gets some of it. I guess a bit of Porsche does live on in my cars. It used to be a bit of Mondeo previously in the form of fixings from a car I broke for spares.

Do you remember what size the cord was?

Its BluTac! Black not blue but otherwise similar. I used to have a massive ball of it in my garage. The clue was the odour.

I've just bought and fitted 8mm neoprene cord to mine (it shows 8mm and 9mm for the original part 000.043.172.00) and it was perfect, I would say 10mm would be too big as my 8mm was a little tight getting the lights back in. I used a little smear of Bostik type glue on each seal side to hold it in place on the light and make a good seal, worked a treat.
