WANTED: 944 Turbo Torque Tube

Post by Porker »

Hi all, I need a salvaged torque tube to keep my '87 944 Turbo alive

I've been having some mystery vibrations which are being investigated by Jon @ JMG.

Having checked clutch, fly wheel, crank and the torque tube, it appears the rear one or two torque tube bearings and potentially the rubber mounts are knackered. Usually people ignore noisy torque tubes but it seems like mine has gone past the noisy stage, into the actually knackered / undriveable stage...

Ideally I'd like to get one from a club member-owned car rather than pot luck from an unknown salvage car, please!

What have you got? I need to get it to JMG in Bournemouth http://www.jmgporsche.co.uk/

Thanks,
944 Turbo 87E Zermatt Silver

If it's the bearings and a replacement is unavailable, a last resort could be a rebuild with new bearings... Clarke's Garage has details on how to do this although if preferred, I believe there is a place around Midlands/ Stafford that can rebuild - £270 springs to mind...

Good luck.

Thanks for advice :-) I'm lead to believe it's quite easy to do it badly so I'm going to see if I can take a punt on a good used item for now. Sadly I've "invested" a lot in the car recently and I can't really afford to do it properly. The amount of labour involved is pretty hideous so fingers crossed I can source something that'll last a few years.
