Lack of use would be my guess. That or a flexible brake hose beginning to fail.

Plate lift perhaps? It's a fairly common reason for sticking brakes.

I doubt it on a 2.5 ; they came with ATE calipers :).

They're pretty simple single piston calipers but there are a couple of nylon bushes between the calipers block and the carrier which bolts to the hub assembly. If the bushes wear I could imagine an intermittent sticking/ binding would be possible. Bearing in mind the car must be close to 30 years old it might be worth getting the calipers refurbished. There are quite a few people around the country who can offer the service and from experience it makes quite a difference to the braking performance for a relatively small outlay.

That's good news then.... :) it's a PITA to sort - I'm just sorting some callipers with that problem to go on a 924.

You can refurb the calipers yourself fairly easily for about £75 for both rears. This will get you a seal kit for each side and a hardware kit (pins clips ect) that does both sides. The calipers will clean up well with a drill mounted wire brush. If you repaint them make sure you mask the areas that the pads slide on and make sure those areas are cleaned back to metal. The tricky bit is getting the pistons out, i took mine to a local garage and asked them to airgun them out with compressed air.
