Hi all,

Having owned my 968 for a couple of years and no longer needing the 4 door saloon that is the Jag XJ, I'm considering this 2.7 2006 year 987 Boxster on a 55 plate with manual 'box which has 127k miles evenly spread over the last 10 years.







She's not perfect and has had a respray on the front bumper recently and a leak repaired that lead to a damp passenger footwell in the last couple of years. There's a decent history folder that accompanies the car. She drives well but needs the exhaust looking at (possibly a blow somewhere and the clamps on the tail piece have failed) which the dealers have agreed to sort along with a new windscreen due to a chip in the bottom corner.

At just under £8k, it's seems reasonably priced but I wondered if there are any common issues that 987's suffer from that I should look out for... Such as the IMS that plagued some of the 986's.

Any advice from the forum would be welcome

BTW, there will be a 2004, 53 plate XJ for sale soon if any one is interested I'll list it properly when I have full details and photos.

It looks nice, about the same mileage as the 986 I purchased in december.
Has it had a clutch done yet ?

Thanks Jason. Haven't seen anything in the invoices... Will have a closer look and ask the question. I gather your question suggests the mileage could be around the right time for a clutch to go?

It may have been much earlier, from 80,000
If it hasn't been done already, it may not be too long

I know the 2.7 was less likely to have IMS issues but at 125k miles i'd have thought it would have failed by now if it was going to.
If a clutch has been replaced, they may have also replaced IMS bearinng at the same time

My 987 is the same model, age and colour. Front bumper resprays are not unusual, they pick up stone chips really easily. Also the passenger footwell issue with water is quite common. Apparently the drain holes just behind the seats (by the engine bay) can get blocked causing rain water to flood over the bulkhead into the passenger floor area. This can cause problems with the computer which sits below the passenger seat.
Other things to be aware of is the Excise licence costs, which changed in 2006 (ish) from £290 to £450 for the same car. Also the aircon condensers are vulnerable behind the fairly open front bumper grilles. Check these area's for a build up of debris and condenser damage. Coil springs can break at the top too.

I have a similar car but at 60k miles. Condensers were replaced recently due to new leak. A new Bosch S4 battery has fixed, seemingly, a small 'hot start' issue. Expect to have roof closing issues - doesn't sit properly in the side channels (very common and easily sorted with a bit of elastic!). Also, common on Boxsters is windows winding themselves down (in the middle of the night usually!). Mine has stopped doing this since making sure I always unlock and re-lock it (with the remote) after it's timed out and locked itself if, for example, when you've had the boot up for a while. If you test drive expect a juddering effect when moving in full lock (eg. reversing) - tis well normal despite it feeling awful!

Good point on the excise duty given its an option to look at one before or after the cut off date, an older car may be better but I wont let it rule the decision.

I have a couple more to test drive over the next couple of weeks so I'll take a closer look at the bits you've pointed out. I believe there can be added protection around the front grills to keep them clearer of debris. I'm not rushing in as I have time on my side yet.

I may up the budget as I'm taking a couple of 11 and 12 plate TT's for a run out on Wednesday courtesy of Stockport Audi as a 2.7 or 3.2 Quattro could also be in the running here.... suppose the excise duty argument dies there really

The higher budget could see a later/ lower mile 987 on the drive or even an early Cayman at a push... prefer 987 though... so torn on the options!!
