Caliper Colours

Post by LozS2 »

I've recently taken my brake calipers from my 944 S2 to be refurbished and painted. I did think about having then painted red but I've decided to stick with the original black.

I just wondered what people's opinions are regarding brake caliper colours? Anyone changed colours? Anything outlandish or unusual would be interesting.

If I was going to paint mine, I'd go for red to match the car. No point with the teledials though as you won't see them.

I painted mine red and they enhance the wheels without being too tacky.

My car is red too and I'm still slightly tempted to do the calipers red. I have a general rule though with regards to changing things on the car, which is that if I'm not sure I should stick with originality. Hopefully they should still look pretty smart in a fresh coat of black and new decals.

Anyone painted theirs or seen any others in day-glo green? When I was a kid I remember a fashion for odd day-glo socks, maybe someone should do that :D .

I wouldn't worry too much about caliper colour. Red or black will always be acceptable to most people if you sell.
Weird colours like green, not so much.

The good thing with black is, they don't look so rubbish when dirty or chipped later on :D

Mine ended up Aston Martin yellow. Be warned that lighter colours are a pain to keep clean.

Painted non original colour calipers (ie black) look appalling! Even on the new - Ferrari, Lambo etc they look crass. Satin Black please...

Jim

I thought about yellow too as I thought it might contrast nicely with the red car. In the end I chickened out of that one though.

Dave

I guess a lot of it comes down to personal preference. Since I don't have a strong feeling about any colour I figured keeping the original colour is least likely to p' anyone off if I come to sell in the future. So it's the easyiest choice for me.

I must say I admire anyone that makes changes to their car to make it really individual. It shows a real commitment to it, and it's great to see things that are really striking even it isn't what I would choose myself.

I'm planning to repaint my tired black calipers this summer. My car is black and I was thinking to go orange, just to be different and a change from the red / yellow options.
I'm aware it may not please the purist but its my car and I'm not doing it to make it easier to sell!
Anyway, if somebody turned away from buying a good car because of the colour of the brake calipers

The yellow callipers look great to me. It probably does help that both cars have modern looking wheels.

Orange is an interesting choice. You'll definitely have to post some pics when done.

One thing about painted calipers, what ever colour, is that it could be a good sign that the car has been looked after. And if done recently with a full refurb of the brakes its something any buyer should see as a good seling point. As I'm finding out with mine a full refurb and paint can be a costly job if you're not doing it yourself. It's only taken 10 years since the last major work on the brakes for several of the bleed-nipples to become seized. Thankfully they have been rescued (but £35 each to undo with some ultrasonic thing).

Got these back from the refurbishers, looking pretty good. Took a little while longer than expected thanks to one caliper that had to be repainted a few times.
