Removing bearing inner from stub axle?

Replacing the rear wheel bearings on my 85 944 (steel swingarms) and I've got a bit stuck...

Any ideas on how to get that inner bearing race off?!

My best attempt so far has been mole grips on the race, braced on an axle stand and whacking the stub axle with a mallet, but it hasn't shifted at all. Soaked in WD-40 and heated to no avail. I've been checking ebay for new axle prices...

Also, I presume that it should be pushed flush against the face at the end of the stub axle? It wasn't when I pulled it out and it won't shift in that direction, but otherwise I don't understand how the assembly should work.

Carefully cut it with a dremel, then you'll be able to remove it

Did consider that, I've not had great luck with dremel cutting discs and hardened steel in the past though! Still, I'm at the point where it can't hurt to try

Dremel, cut a slot & welt it with a sharp cold chisel. Or carefully grind a flat with a grinder either bench or hand.

I've memories of dremel cutting discs disintegrating against hardened steel, this hardly touched the disc though.

Was that the collar the oil seal runs on?

Done loads over the years, never fails :mrgreen:

The worse ones are Lotus Elans they can be pigs to get off. My Jeep makes me cry, £40 spacer, £40 bearing & a £10 oil seal. A leak means the bearing & spacer are toast, just to replace the seal. Not done the 3 mine has had, but my Jeep mechanic has.

Waylander - It was the inner race of the old bearing.

Is there supposed to be something to space the inner race against the end of the stub axle? It makes sense for there to be as otherwise the inner bearing is unpositioned and I can't see what the hub nut tightens against... The radius at the end of the stub axle prevents the inner race from butting up against that, and even if it could that would not align it with the rest of the bearing. If there should be a spacer there, as you can see, it wasn't there when I took it out as it would be held on by the inner race! :-?
