I have a 95k mile 2.7 and believe it has the original clutch with the infamous rubber doughnut centre. I am getting severe vibration on acceleration from stand still (it shakes the entire car) I am also getting a snatching effect on slowdown by lift off of accelerator and grinding (ish) sound sometimes at certain revs in all gears. Most of the vibration appears to come from the front and towards the passenger side and gearstick vibrates at a crazy frequency at motorway speed, although the car drives nicely with no hesitation of note once upto speed and held at the same speed.

I hope I have described all this well enough to get your input, this is my 1st 944 and thought the car wasn't as nice to drive as I'd have expected and think this explains why. If the clutch does need replacing, what would you guys expect an indie Porsche specialist to charge for the job? What else could it be with the same symptoms? Should I fit engine mounts at the same time? Any other things that should be replaced at the same time as the clutch is being done?

Cheers

Hi,

This viewtopic.php?f=25&t=12732 topic describes the symptoms when my clutch went. Later, it goes on to list all the parts that should be replaced at the same time.

It was a painful introduction to Porsche ownership for me, so I hope you manage to find a decent indie who can keep the labour cost down for you.

Cheers,
Bryan

Thanks, I'm really pleased with my car other than this. Interior and exterior are nice. Very little rust but didn't realise this weakness existed before I bought it. On the plus side, it'll be perfect for 100k and several years once it's done.... I hope...

Just read that thread, so pleased I found it. I will see if the garage I intend to take it to mention the extras. Do any of these come in the clutch kit?

I've had rough quotes of 2k from opc, 1500 from an indie - for a square dash lux.

I doubt it as I had to ask for these extras specifically.

My mates 944 Cab clutch also gone. I checked the portal for wear and it is within spec: 24mm It is in the very local OPC workshop right now for a complete clutch job. I presume the rubber centre plate has collapsed...

I am also presuming that this rubber clutch arrangement had something to do with the torque tube 'buffer' arrangement?
