New to ownership - can anyone recommend the best pads for an 83' car ? There seems to be a limited choice and would prefer not have EBC would prefer ferodo ds2500 as will use for a little bit of track use - but cannot find them anywhere??

As you can see from the above, most Porsche model/fitment lists are bullshit. The 944 2.7l has the same calipers, but they list it as a 2.7l S2 with the same pad as the Turbo. The caliper was also used on seventies 911s, 924/931, as well as early 928s.

The 4,5l 928s weren't 16v(!) but they do appear to be ATE calipers from the listing.

A nice chap on here called trackm3 seems to be the brakeman. He just did some digging for me (i have the same brakes as you) and came up with Mintex 1144s front and rear, and said that Mintex M 1155s are available for the fronts. Might be a good option for you. Give him a PM as i think he can source them.

I ran EBC Greens all round on my 944 albeit it had Brembos from an S2. I've done it with quite a few of my cars as they produce low amounts of dust. Never had any problems even with a little track use.

Better to avoid EBC product altogether.

Ferrodo DS2500 pads are definitely better than either Mintex compound in my opinion, but they're cheaper too. If you're having to pay more because they're on the shelf, then Id opt for DS2500s every time.

If you use the same trick that I have (know your calipers and where they came from / what they were fitted to) then you will be able to find pads from most manufacturers. For example, Performance Friction only listed them for the 924S...

I cannot track down the rears however, the serial number is mdb1133 but I can only find standard pads not m1144's - very frustrating

Camskill: be aware that Mintex make them to order though, so there is a lead time. People who have them on the shelf have had them made, and may be reluctant to buy such an unlikely seller.

What brakes did you have previously on the cars? I will admit I have not had a great experience with them and neither have friends who even changed almost everything (pipes, fluid) before changing the pads.

The Yellowstuff is not meant to be too bad but I am awaiting a friend's thoughts on these but he found them a big improvement over the Greens. However, the Yellows are on a Mitsubishi GTO 3000 which previously had cheap pads, and poppodoms for discs!

What state are the brakes in for the OP and what kind of driving do you plan to do? If going upgraded I would also look at Ferodo DS2500s. I would advise some other brands but they are dusty and I shall see if they make the pads for a 944.

If you are dead set on having fast road pads and plan to do a few trackdays as suggested I would then taking a look at Carbon Lorraine brake pads. In the Clio world these are said to be as good as DS2500s and M1144s, and possibly a little better with acceptable braking from cold. Indeed, I was considering getting a set of these for my Clio 172 and still may do on my Escort RST which is not a daily.

However, what is given with one hand is taken with the other.

Brake Dust
-While most fast road pads are dusty, these CLs are a little worse

Brake Squeal
Some people claim they squeal, others do not

Cost
They are the same money as DS2500s
