Hello,
Any thoughts on this?
Loud moaning from steering ONLY when the car is warm and well run-in, and ONLY at very low speeds, inching forwards going from full lock to full lock (e.g. parking).
I've had this problem for three years. Main dealers and specialists have either failed to get the car warm enough, or been completely stumped by it.
So far I have fitted or had done the following:
Replacement re-conditioned PAS pump
Replacement belt
Replacement UJ
Replacement PAS reservoir hose (968), bottle cleaned and fresh fluid.
The rack has also been thoroughly greased.
But the problem remains...
It's a mystery. It's live-able with but a little undignified to arrive somewhere and have it moan when I'm parking...
Thanks!
barnaby

The groaning is normally the pressure release valve in the pump. Most cars do it especialy older ones & on full lock. Personally I wouldn't worry about it.
Just as a thought try it with the filler lid off, if you have frothing or bubbles rising then I suspect the pump may not be as reconditioned as you thought. One of our posters went through a few to get one that worked!

I had a similar noise on my T4 - it was a usual morning greeting as I reversed out of my drive. I was shocked that I missed it as much as I did when it disappeared after I fitted a new steering rack ...

Thanks guys.

(noise only occurs when engine warm - no noise first thing in the morning!)

Happens on mine every now and again when warm, you can feel it slightly through the wheel even. But everything is in good order so I don't let it worry me and I'm normally very fussy about these things! Just one of the charms of an old vehicle I guess...

My 968 does it when warm, usually on full lock when reversing into a parking space, I just live with it.... 8)

Forget your groaning steering - my gf groans when she gets in the car! 'Why do you have to drive so fast' 'What's that crap music you playing (Led Zep, Stones, Quo, Clapton etc). Slow down - we home now? Yes dear. I'll park you here, I'm going to the pub...

Certainly normal on a RHD 944.

I was once told it was the power steering pipes vibrating under load, as they weren't ideally designed when the car was turned from a LHD (home market) model to a RHD (export) model. I don't know how true this is but it makes a good story. :)

Long and the short of it is not to worry about it!

Oli.
