I didn't think it was going to fail but if I'd had an idea it would I'd have taken my camera to get some pics while it was up on the ramp..

There are a couple of penny sized holes (one of which in fairness looks like it's been stamped out) just by the forward transaxle mounts but they are behind where the (not really supposed to be used as..) jacking posts are which will make them a b@stard to access for welding without dropping the axle...

Wasn't really expecting that if I'm honest, especially as the rest of it was A-OK ...

I don't think it's going to be too much of a problem, more that I wasn't expecting it TBH .. And also that it's in an awkward place to fix without dropping the trailing arm, an operation that will be further complicated by the plethora of terminally corroded fasteners and nuts. My friendly tester explained to me that a less scrupulous motorist might tack a plate over the hole then - as MOT testers are no longer allowed to scrape anything away - use some exhaust putty as it sets 'rock-hard'.

I'm looking at it as an opportunity to explore avenues hitherto unexplored - well, at some time in the future anyway. My tester has advised me to come back on Saturday morning when he's next working...

As you can see, neither are particularly well placed for an easy repair..

After a morning of cleaning, scraping, grinding, clipping and some creative welding, I have a pass!

I fear however that a full remedial cure will involve removing the sills - or at least cutting a window into them - and plating from the inside... Next year.

Correct ... and most probably had there been u/s there from day 1 I might not have had such a problem ...

However, there is plenty there now... Another job to do for the winter!

Another plus point that Mot testers don't like touching greasy slimey gunky crap covered bits

that's not too bad... I have recently done a similar repair to my drivers side without cutting into the outer sill, alas i haven't posted details here but there are photo's on the PCGB forum in my build blog if of any help...Since you seem to have no or very little underseal present you may want to take a look at POR15...Frost Restorers sell it...it's stated as the only product on the market that will stop rust and is used by classic car restorers to preserve their customers cars.. worth taking a look.
