Hi I think my thrust bearing may be on its way out ( noise when no clutch engaged no noise when clutch is pressed ) I live in the north of Scotland Inverness, does anyone no of a garage that could do the work somewhere near to me or with in traveling distance thanks ( 944s ) if that makes a difference

I've had exactly the same noise for quite a while now.... I've assumed it is the thrust bearing and have been trying to ignore it because its going to be expensive!

It could be the thrust bearing, or it could be a torque tube bearing, or it could be an idler in the gearbox? Either way it will be a lot of labour. Maybe worth identifying exactly the source of the noise, however this is not very easy as sound resonates up and down the drive chain!

Worth trying to move the gear stick with clutch out and see if that changes/reduces the noise. Move the shifter hard left and hard right with clutch out. If the noise goes away it is gearbox related. If this makes no difference you are most probably looking at thrust bearing or torque tube bearing. Given that the torque tube needs removing to get at the thrust bearing it may benefit to do the clutch and get your torque tube refurbished while it is out. TT can be done quite reasonably and makes sense while it is out, and to be honest it would be madness not to do the clutch and release bearing while you have access to it.

Good luck

Stuart

The car is at work at the moment home in the works van, off to a garage tomorrow after work to get it on a ramp to see if they can find the problem and a ruff price for the work .But I am hoping it is not the gearbox as that was rebuilt in 2012 :?

So just got back from the garage it turns out not to be the thrust bearing the noise is coming from the gearbox so much for having it rebuilt 3 years ago!!!!!
Does anyone know what gearboxes fit the 944s or somewhere I could get a reconditioned one
stuart

Sounds totally normal to me. Mine has been like that since I bought it in 1998 and have now driven 221,000 miles in it.

At rest, in neutral with the engine running you can hear a rattle from the cogs in the gearbox.

Press the clutch in and it goes away.

Go and listen to someone elses, then don't worry about it :D
