Just bought a 1986 944 turbo after a few weeks of looking - needs a bit of attention here and there.... but will soon be ready for a bit of upgrading!!!

What should I do first? Who does the best chips for the 944 turbo?

Some more information would be useful, but before even considering chips, I would want to make sure the rest of the car is 100% in good working order, which includes suspension, steering, brakes, engine & exhaust.

And not forgetting bodywork condition of course!

I happen to have a "Superchip" in mine - adds about 35bhp I believe and works fine on the Turbo.
Try talking to Promax - they can offer very sound advice and have bags of experience.

Yes I would make sure the car is totally sound before starting to change it. Are the belts up to date, water pump, gearbox oil, fuel filter, brake fluid as well as the normal service items?

Once you are sure you gave a good one that is safe and rust free, then you can take it from there :)

have a compression test done on the engine before upping boost or adding chips. as said with above replies check the rest of the car make sure its ok ;)

oh and make sure you use the expensive fuel too. it burns slower thus aiding the point of explosion closer to where it should be and not pre-igniting. ;)

thats the expensive stuff i think the cheap stuff is 87 ron if you can find a shell or tesco that do the 99 and 100 octane you can safely turn the boost up a bit more ;)

the higher the octane rating the higher you can boost. just never use the premium cheaper u/l it will melt pistons

As said above don't start adding Chips and what not until you are 100% certain the car is upto it.

Pics please!

Very difficult to detect pre ignition at high speed in turbos, at low speed you hear the pink, at high speed the noise masks it. Sometimes a plug check will show it, plugs wil look shot blasted & pure white, but very often by then it's too late! :(

I would agree with everyone urging you to attend to the basics first. I replaced all of the vacuum hoses, the air filter, spark plugs, HT leads, distributor cap and rotor arm first. The difference that it made was astonishing.
