Pardon my ignorance here but are turbo blocks lined?
From my experience with more mundane engines water leakage into the combustion chamber from a cracked head or porous block will decarbonise the chamber and pistons and pressurise the cooling system in a normally aspirated car. I have no experience of turbo engines but I suspect a certain backflow of exhaust gases will be experienced until the turbo has spooled up, hence cooling the exhaust valve with steam in this situation.
Pressure testing with a cold unstressed head is not conclusive imho.
Pop that exhaust valve out and have a look down the port.
The bores are lined yes. I was concerned the pressure test wasn't conclusive because my symptoms of water loss only happen when I use the turbo.
I did look into the exhaust port and it looked ok, I can only see a crack in-between the head bolt hole and one of the water jackets which doesn't seem to be the cause according to the machine shop.
