I thought my sunroof was working fine (until today when it stopped opening). But the method of operation always seemed a bit odd. It would open fine, but when I closed it, the roof would just rest at the back so that it would raise of its own accord at speed, or I could raise it with a hand, or it would jump up a bit when a door was closed. A very slight touch on the "open" side of the button would cause it to lock. I just put it down to a Porsche quirk, but now I'm wondering whether it's how it's supposed to operate ?

Mine is the same. Up until recently I had to hold the micro switch and press the close button the lower the roof once opened. I removed the micro switch, cleaned it and sprayed with WD40. The roof now opens and closes from the single console switch. However I too have to flick the button to raise the arms to lock the roof. All done by guess work.

Any ideas???

Hope some one answers this as I've just bought a 944 and I'm having similar problems.

Moist likely that the plastic gears are broken , they operate the lifting /locking arm at the rear of the sunroof.
Remove the trim panel and then the covers from the lifting arms.

all parts are still available

If the gears were broken wouldn't the roof simple not lift or retract?

www.clarks-garage.com has a guide to setting up the sunroof properly at http://www.clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/body-03.htm

It sounds to me like the sensor at the front of the sunroof in the centre is not detecting that there is a sunroof in place so it is allowing the arms to retract down into the roof

You may find that a large section of teeth are missing

When following the Clarke's guide, pay particular attention to the setting of the clutch, this tightens over time and is a common cause of gears stripping, adjust to minimum when refitting, failure can result in a set of new gears being wrecked, I speak from experience :(

Well, having done nothing to the sunroof since starting this thread, it decided this morning to start working again. Just once, and then refused thereafter. So I guess at least that rules out stripped gears and indicates an intermittent microswitch problem. A job for tomorrow, hopefully.

When you get the switch out, just give a good cleaning. I used WD40 after making sure there was no dry solder joints etc. Defo worth trying before replacing.
