You can find a lot of helpful info here http://www.clarks-garage.com

Changing the gearbox oil is pretty straight forward but I couldn't say about the torque converter needed any as I've never had an auto.

Try Opie Oils for the correct fluid.

The reason for why your mechanic said not to touch the gearbox oil if all is well is because ATF tends to have alot of detergent present within it. If gearbox oil changes are neglected in an auto it is said flesh fluid can loosen up debris inside. Just look up ZF 4HP22 Gearbox oil changes ; they are renowned for it. One way around it is said to change the oil slowly (i.e only a 1/4 of the capacity at a time).

Considering the issues I have seen with auto cars and questionably on one of my cars say leave it :).

Hi WelshPorsche,

I replaced all the fluid in my early auto box and its a very easy job, well worth it.

It has an internal oil filter so all the debris is caught in that so you run very little risk of disturbing it, just make sure you keep everything super clean when you put it back together.

You can get a new oil filter for it on ebay for a few pounds, then i recommend buying Lucas automatic transmission treatment and mix that with your new transmission fluid.

If you have any questions pm me :-)

Thanks guys for all replys like I say I'm trying to get all fluids done as the last big service history was in 2004 it's been off road in dry storage for a long time due to last owner havering a stroke it has only done 4,000 miles since then but I imagine fluids would still need doing urgent the antifreeze in bottle is blue in coulour last year I had belts done and engine oil and filters and plugs so this is why i would like to get the other jobs done on her

Hi guys I took a look at my auto gearbox today to check on the fill bolt and drain bolt but can only find one bolt ? Lol any ideas

Sorry that's the Diff am I right in thinking you drain the auto box by disconnecting the pipe that connects the bottle to the box and then drop the underside down and change the automatic box filter then clean and refit and fill it back up through adding ATF in the bottle? No drain and filler bolts ?

According to Castrol Dextron III will do the trick. I still stand by what I said considering the detergents DIII has (I.e Lots!)

Before you attempt anything I would see if you can loosen off the filler plug first :).
