a neighbour of mine has recently bought a 05 bmw 318 cab from bmw dealer, with luckily a warranty, he found one or two issues which were dealt with, then he noticed a small rust scab on the roof frame, took it back to the dealer and was told that the part was not available separately and they would have to order a complete new hood assembly, but unfortunately they needed the car for a week to fit and they gave him a 123 demo to use (it was that nice week about 2 weeks ago) so he hasn't really had the roof down, total bill just over £10k all under warranty, could you see porsche agreeing to that work ?

Maybe ,maybe not but thats a ridiculous amount of money for the roof,how can they justify that?

Just read an article about the Mazda MX5 in Classic Car Weekly where they say a relacement hood is about £250.Simple is best eh? I wonder how much a Boxster hood costs? Probably something similar to the BMW I would think which brings up the question about insurance claims for a vandalised hood on an early Boxster valued at say 10-15k.Would the insurance write such a vehicle off?

Hood replacement for a Boxster is I believe around £750 so not too bad. Newish ones that are vandalised can have replacement panels fitted.

Thats quite reasonable really and good news for Boxster owners. The price of the BMW hood would certainly put me off buying one of those!!

to be honest it was the full electric hood that disappears under the cover behind the rear seat, and it was the whole lot that was replaced

It says a lot for BMW warranties,granted ,but It just annoys me that individual parts arent available.Still,thats a sign of the times I think.I recently tried to buy new wiper springs for my Volvo but had to buy the whole arms .Cost me about £35 when all I really needed was a couple of springs

I found a spring manufacturer. Whatever I need I just take a sample & ask for one or two more than I need. The price is always a fiver. Repaired a few machines that way that by rights should have been scraped.
