Hi all,

Working on my 944, car slipped whilst taking it off of the stands and the stand has gone up into the footwell of the drivers side, I've knocked it all back down but but there is obviously still some mangled metal there...

Is this repairable?

Will

Firstly sorry to hear you've had a misshap with your new car, Everything is repairable, usually at a cost. If its just the floorpan and you've managed to dress it back to level it should be okay. I trust none of the metal has split?

Best to post up a couple of pictures to allow up to assess the full extent of the damage.

At least you were using stands when working underneath and nobody was hurt during this incident.

Also something to check is the operation of the accelerator pedal, I believe they can stick if the car has been jacked up in the wrong place.

I had a similar thing on my old 924, but left a stand under the floorpan as I let it off the jack ... It was on the NS of the car so didn't compromise the pedal action at all, but I managed to beat it mostly back to shape with a rubber mallet and the remaining undulation wasn't noticeable under the carpet...

In your case I'd begin by checking the throttle action as things were/are and as long as it's free I'd just wallop it back into shape. If you find the throttle sticks, I'd probably do the same but check the throttle action as you're going along, hopefully you'll start to feel the difference as the deformation is reduced ...

It's my fault really, as I stood it up on the rubber bungs, despite reading that it was risky to do so!

Unfortunately it has punctured the pan...

Photos attached. The accelerator is fine - I'm considering buying a MIG and doing it myself (i have welded before!) - I'll have to cut out the base and weld in a patch....

Great start!

On another note - what would be a reasonable cost for the replacement of engine mounts (excluding parts). Also... the cooling fan isn't working, fuse is fine.... likely to be the fan or the relay? Is it possible to check the relay without an ammeter?

Also, realised that the steering wheel isn't one straight as the small hex were overtightened when initially put on so they are rounded! Screw extractors and replacement hex bolts should do that right.

I'm telling myself "couple of hundred quid and you're there!" - I'm being told that I should have got a twingo on a lease!

Is that definitely the floorpan that is split?

Looks like the underseal to me, viewing on my phone?

Was just saying that in the photo the part that is split is white, looked like underseal or brushable seam sealer - so wondered if the floorpan was fractured as well, or just the protective coating.

I have a similar problem on my Turbo, a friend of mine lifted the car on those points on a lift, but the passenger one kept going up without lifting the car!! So either it has been bent previously or it happened when we lifted. I did tell him that those are not recognised jacking points, but on a four point lift it's not as bad as single point lifting at those points. My old S was certainly fine when we lifted in the same place.

Need to get the wing off on mine and have a proper look really - suspect there might be some corrosion in that area that has weakened it. Should really hammer it back down flat, but haven't got around to it!!

I'm prepared for the worst mate!!

Although it has had the sills replaced once so you'd like to think the floorpan was looked at at the same time - but you never know.

I'm going to be re-doing the sills anyway to be sure inners are good, so any work the floor needs will get sorted then, all being well :)

Ouch...

I suspect that mine has gone through the floor to some extent as i seem to remember seeing carpet from underneath! I shall remove the carpet once my engine mounts are done and give it a proper look!

Will keep you all informed. I'm hoping that if it has been compromised, a patch welded in with underseal underneath should do the trick - sound about right? Rot hopefully doesn't look to bad, fingers crossed...

Will
