What's the best / right way to treat localised rust like this?

Assuming metal is still structuraly sound Remove as much as you can with wire brush, clean with SP12
Treat with FE123 multiple times, then paint with rust buster Epoxy mastic
Read at rust.co.uk I found the products excellent

If it is good enough for you then it is the way to go!

For areas that can't really be treated and painted I'm using ACF50 corrosion block which is an oil based coating developed initially for the aviation industry. I spray the underside of my 928 with it. Fuel lines, suspension parts and basically anything that is rusty or may rust. I reckon it would be a good treatment for 944 sills as it should creep into all the corners etc. This spring I'm planning on getting the undercarriage steam cleaned then a fresh application.

I use that too. Developed for marine applications as well. I have it in my sill cavities and anywhere generally susceptible to rusting. It has also stopped my Gaz shocks dissolving in front of my eyes!! Good stuff.

Never tried ACF-50 looks like good stuff, must get some to compare ..... I use corrosion X which appears to be similar, I only use on Aluminimum and suspension components,ABS pump, Power steering pump etc great on brake fuel line fittings
Not sure I would want to use on exposed bodywork as the Primary form of protection

Acf50 do a thicker marine grade version called corrosion block. So perhaps more suitable for exposed areas than their regular stuff. Read a bit about corrosionx as well. Both products seem comparable.
